The X-Files Prequel Novels Will Follow Mulder and Scully as Teenagers

If there's one thing the X-Files revival has proven so far, it's that fans can't get enough of Mulder and Scully. So naturally, the franchise is expanding into young adult novels with the X-Files: Origins series, which will follow our favorite FBI agents as teenagers.

The series will begin with two novels that will be released simultaneously: Agent of Chaos and Devil's Advocate. Agent of Chaos will follow Mulder as a 17-year-old, while Devil's Advocate will follow Scully as a 15-year-old. Here are the details, according to a report

Each story is set in the spring of 1979, when serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news. The books... follow Mulder and Scully as they experience life-changing events that set them on the path to becoming the FBI agents depicted by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on the cult-favorite TV show The X-Files.

Agent of Chaos will be written by Kami Garcia, best known for writing the fantasy YA novel Beautiful Creatures, which went on to become a #1 NYT bestseller, as well as Bram Stoker nominees Unbreakable and Unmarked. Devil's Advocate will be penned by Jonathan Maberry, a horror fiction writer who won the Bram Stoker Award for his novels Rot & Ruin, Dust and Decay, and Flesh and Bone. He has also written several works for Marvel Comics, including issues of Wolverine, Black Panther, and Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher.

"When I watched the pilot episode back in 1993, I became immediately obsessed with The X-Files," said publisher Erin Stein. "As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories."

Agent of Chaos and Devil's Advocate are set to be published in January 2017.

Mulder And Scully Will Be Back As Teens In A New ‘X-Files’ Offshoot

The supernatural procedural The X-Files ended in 2002, but it never really went away. Since the final episode of the original run, the show’s following has only grown larger and more ardent. Home-video releases made converts out of skeptics as well as those who may have been too young the first time around, and the charmingly dated mid-’90s style has made the show an unlikely totem of nostalgia. The recent reboot on Fox hasn’t exactly wowed all original fans of the series, but it does definitively prove that there’s still a sizable amount of interest in this cult classic. And with a new move in X-Files licensing made today, Fox hopes that they can expand the show’s appeal even further.

Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive today that a pair of new The X-Files: Origins novels will tell the story of Mulder and Scully’s teen years for a young-adult audience. I can hear your reaction already: “Steamy teen romance between Mulder and Scully? Who’s been reading my combination dream journal/erotic fan-fiction compendium?” But these two novels will track young Mulder and Scully independently, with Agent of Chaos following David Duchovny’s character and Devil’s Advocate following Gillian Anderson’s. (Plus, announced to be 17 and 15 respectively, Mulder and Scully would be underage. Have some self-respect.) The novels will relay the series of events that led the two characters into their careers with the FBI, bringing all of the occult goodness fans have come to expect.

Though there are certainly plenty of teenaged X-Files fans who will find this development exciting as anything, this does feel like a bit of a cash-grab. There’s a whole lot of money in the YA lit market, and the supernatural elements of this property would potentially put it in league with many of the other recent best-sellers in the demographic. But if this means that desperate The X-Files fans will have something more to pore over while lamenting the lackluster revival season, all the power to them.

Gillian Anderson, The X-Files

Duchovny said, “It was interesting when Chris [Carter] reconceived this mini-series, he kind of twisted the old story which was. there was this small Cabal of humans amongst them was the Cigarette-Smoking Man, who was in league with this Aliens, that were going to come back at some point and colonise the Earth”. However, she does find Tad O’Malley (Joel McHale) standing amidst the chaos, claiming to have no idea what happened to Mulder. If the assumption of the International Business Times report that the cure for the life-threatening disease may actually be found in Scully’s blood is true, then the finale episode, which airs on February 22, may just confirm this.

Erin Stein, publisher at Imprint, is a firm fan of The X-Files and told Entertainment, “When I watched the pilot episode back in 1993, I became immediately obsessed with The X-Files”.

Featuring a 17-year-old Mulder and a 15-year-old Scully, novels Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate will each focus on one member of America’s government conspiracy duo. Why did Mulder become a believer? This, of course, forms an accompaniment to the recently rebooted The X-Files television series, which saw the return of both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Mulder and Scully. We get to tell those stories.

Garcia was the co-author of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels, as well as a solo series, The Legion, which included the New York Times bestselling book Unbreakable and its sequel novel, Unmarked. Devil’s Advocate, Scully’s story, will be written by Jonathan Maberry (Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers). Do not miss the nail-biting finale of The X-Files miniseries this Monday on Fox.

'The X-Files Origins' Book Series Will Tell Story Of How Teenage Mulder And Scully Learned To Believe

By Brett Bodner @brettbodner On 02/22/16 AT 2:58 PM

"The X-Files" miniseries is coming to an end Monday night, but fans are hoping for more stories about Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). While nothing has been confirmed about another season, or possibly a third film, the origin stories of Mulder and Scully are going to be told in two novels set to arrive in January 2017. The stories are expected to take fans through the lives of the two FBI agents when they were teenagers in two separate novels under "The X-Files Origins" series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the novels will follow a 15-year-old Scully and a 17-year-old Mulder as they start down their path of becoming FBI agents. Scully's story will be told in a book called "Devil’s Advocate" and Mulder's in "Agent of Chaos." Each novel is expected to give fans insight as to what made the agents believe the way they do on the TV series. Erin Stein, the publisher of Imprint, who acquired the rights to make the books, is a big fan of "The X-Files" and now gets to the opportunity to tell the back story of Mulder and Scully.

"As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories,” Stein explained to EW.

The story of how Mulder became a believer in the supernatural and how Scully became a skeptic will be told in next year's "The X-Files Origins" book series. Photo: Fox

It will be interesting to see if "Agent of Chaos" goes more in depth to the abduction of Mulder's sister, Samantha, which is the major event that sent Mulder on his quest for the truth. His love for his sister and drive to find out what happened to her is a big part of the show and fans just might get to read how the abduction played out. The novel will be written by Kami Garcia.

While Mulder has always had an open mind to the unknown, Scully always looked to science and faith for answers. Thriller and horror writer Jonathan Maberry will get to tell the story of how Scully became a skeptic.

While fans can now look forward to learning more about two of their favorite characters in next year's book series, many believe they will soon get to see more from Mulder and Scully on TV or in a movie. Show creator Chris Carter told International Business Times that because the ratings for the miniseries were good, he "can't imagine" there won't be even more future installments of the hit sci-fi show. Carter also has said that he has a third "X-Files" film written as well. Fox entertainment president David Madden feels the same way Carter does about "The X-Files" and he told Variety he'd "love" for there to be more episodes in the future.

"The X-Files" miniseries concludes Monday on Fox at 8 p.m. EST. "The X-Files Origins" series novels hit book shelves everywhere in January 2017.

YA series to explore the adventures of teenage Dana Scully and Fox Mulder

The X-Files revival concludes tonight, though Fox desperately wants to keep hopes for more episodes alive. But believers can still get their fix of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder...as teenagers. Entertainment Weekly announced the upcoming X-Files Origins series, a pair of YA novels that will follow 15-year-old Dana Scully and 17-year-old Fox Mulder. Titled Agent Of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate respectively, the two novels are both set in the spring of 1979, when lil’ teen Scully and lil’ teen Mulder first experience the life-altering events that eventually pave the way to their adult lives as FBI agents.

Agent Of Chaos—which is Mulder’s book, if you couldn’t tell from the title—will be written by Kami Garcia, co-author of the Caster Chronicles, which includes the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Creatures, and author of The Legion series. Scully’s book, Devil’s Advocate, will be written by New York Times-bestselling thriller and horror novelist Jonathan Maberry, author of Dead Of Night and Patient Zero. The X-Files Origins novels will get to the roots of both Mulder and Scully and how they eventually came to be the believer and skeptical medical doctor they are in the series. We’re guessing they were pretty much exactly the same as teenagers, just even angstier than the angsty adults they become. Only they didn’t have each other to channel their frustrations through back then.

The series was acquired by Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, and both books are set to publish simultaneously in January 2017. “When I watched the pilot episode back in 1993, I became immediately obsessed with The X-Files,” Erin Stein, publisher of Imprint, said in a statement. “As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.” We think the bigger question is, did 15-year-old Dana Scully love pantsuits as much as present-day Dana Scully?

New X-Files book series will give Mulder and Scully origin stories

The X-Files might be ending its Fox mini-series on Monday, but the show is set to live on via two new YA novels that will give Fox Mulder and Dana Scully origin stories.

The two upcoming novels – Agents of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate – will be part of a new literary series: The X-Files Origins, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Is The X-Files Islamophobic and transphobic?

Both stories will be set in the spring of 1979, “when serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news”. The novels will depict the “life-changing events” that led Mulder and Scully to become the FBI agents played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Agents of Chaos focuses on the 17-year-old Mulder, while Devil’s Advocate follows a 15-year-old Scully’s story. Kami Garcia, best known for her solo series The Legion and co-penning Beautiful Creatures – which was adapted into a feature film – will write Agents of Chaos. Devil’s Advocate will be written by Assassin’s Code writer Jonathan Maberry, and both books will be released by Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.

“As a diehard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me,” said Erin Stein, Publisher of Imprint, in a statement. “Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate are set for simultaneous release in January 2017. As for more X-Files episodes, the show’s creator Chris Carter hasn’t ruled out the possibility, saying during January’s TCA panel that everybody is on board, schedules permitting.

X-Files Origins: YA Novels of Teen Mulder and Scully Coming

he X-Files Origins YA novel series will look at the lives of young Mulder and Scully...

The New Adventures of Fox and Dana come to a close tonight, leaving fans wondering how many ghosts are left to chase for the Fox franchise. Strong ratings for The X-Files revival all but assure Fox’s interest in continuing the series in some form, but as of now, nothing is official. While an on-screen continuation will depend on the desire of aging actors, new X-Files stories will live on with a new YA prequel book series from Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.

It may sound more Eerie, Indiana than Young Dana and Fox, but The X-Files cannon will get two new additions in print. Titled The X-Files Origins, the prequel will follow a teenage Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Since we know didn’t grow up together, each future FBI agent will get their own book chronicling the events of an influential summer in their young lives.

The news comes via an EW exclusive. Kami Garcia will write Mulder’s story, fittingly titled “Agent of Chaos.” Garcia is a No. 1 New York Times bestselling author known for Beautiful Creatures, Dangerous Creatures, and The Legion.

Another bestselling author, Jonathan Maberry, will write “Devil’s Advocate,” Scully’s story. Maberry, a Bram Stoker Award winner and Marvel Comics writer, is known for Assassin’s Code, Dead of Night, Patient Zero, and Rot & Ruin.

Both novels will drop simultaneously in January 2017.

X-Files Origins’ book series to follow Mulder and Scully as teenagers

Though the new X-Files season wraps up tonight, fans can look forward to more of the story in book form next year.

According to Entertainment Weekly, two young adult novels are in the works that will follow the show’s protagonists as teenagers. X-Files Origins: Agent of Chaos, written by Kami Garcia (Beautiful Creatures), revolves around a 17-year-old Fox Mulder in the spring of 1979. Meanwhile, X-Files Origins: Devil’s Advocate, written by Marvel comics writer Jonathan Maberry, follows a 15-year-old Dana Scully during the same time period. Both characters experience events that will send them down the path to becoming FBI agents.

“As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me,” said Macmillan’s Erin Stein. “Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

Both Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate will hit shelves on the same day in Jan. 2017. As for more of adult Mulder and Scully, it remains possible that we’ll see another season on Fox.  The network has expressed interest in additional episodes if a deal can be reached with the actors and producers, according to Variety.

New The X-Files novels to follow teenage Mulder and Scully in the late 1970s

Trent Moore
Mon, Feb 22, 2016 4:45pm

With whispers of a second revival season already rumbling, a new series of young adult novels are heading the opposite direction with The X-Files — back in time. That’s right: Get ready to meet teenage Mulder and Scully.

Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group is set to publish two novels as part of The X-Files Origins, with each book focusing on one of our titular heroes during their formidable years. No, before you ask, it won’t try to retcon their origins and turn Mulder and Scully into teenage pals. Instead, each story will focus on one character and the “life-changing events” that “set them on the path” to become future paranormal investigators. Both stories will be set in the spring of 1979.

“When I watched the pilot episode back in 1993, I became immediately obsessed with The X-Files,” says Erin Stein, Publisher of Imprint, said via Entertainment Weekly. “As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

The Mulder-focused story is dubbed Agent of Chaos, and will be written by New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia. Scully’s tale is Devil’s Advoate, and it’ll be penned by Bram Stoker Award winner Jonathan Maberry. If nothing else, they’ve definitely attracted some solid talent to put these stories together.

Both books are set to hit shelves in January 2017.

Do you think this is a story worth telling, or should they leave well enough alone with this corner of the X-Files universe?

X-Files creator Chris Carter says the Fox network are 'going to ask for more'

Considering its six-episode revival was said to be a standalone series, The X-Files finale left fans with one hell of an unexpected cliffhanger.

Despite this, it seems that series creator Chris Carter is pretty convinced that the show's fresh lease of life is just beginning.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he claimed that the show's network Fox "...are going to ask for more."

"The ratings were very good. They were happy with the show. I talked to [FOX TV Group CEO and Chairman] Dana Walden today. She said they'd very much like more. So there's an appetite for more in the future, it's just a matter of figuring out how to get it done."

He did point out one caveat, though.

"The last negotiations took about five months, so it could be a while before we figure out how to do this."

Assuaging this is Carter's belief that both David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderon (Dana Scully) are "game" for a continuation.

Given the huge cliffhanger, you'd better hope so.

The first few episodes of the revival received negative reviews but the consensus is that the season drastically improved with each new episode.

The fresh X-Files fever doesn't end there, either; two origins novels are set to be released tracking Mulder and Scully in their teenage years.

The X-Files airs in the UK on Channel 5 every Monday.

NEW ‘X-FILES ORIGINS’ SHOWS TEENAGE MULDER AND SCULLY

If you have been following the X-Files reboot then you must be as thrilled as we are. Seeing Mulder and Scully back in action is simply too enjoyable! If you really want to geek out on their paranormal adventures, then you really should check out the “X-Files Origins” series.

Two new YA novels with titles “Agent of Chaos” and “Devil’s Advocate” will be released and they will explore the teenage years of the future X-Files agents. The books will be published by Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, NME reported.

“Agent of Chaos” explores 17-year old Mulder while “Devil’s Advocate” looks back on the life of 15-year old Scully. Both books are set in 1979. This year was plagued by serial murders, occult, and government conspiracies.

It was during this time that Mulder and Scully experienced life-changing events. And it was because of these events that each one set on a path destined for the FBI.

“Agent of Chaos” will be written by Kami Garcia, a No. 1 New York Times bestselling author. Garcia is also a co-author of “Beautiful Creatures” and “Dangerous Creatures” novels. She also wrote the New York Times bestseller “Unbreakable” and “Unmarked,” its sequel.

The books are part of the “Legion” series and both were nominated for Bram Stoker Awards. She has an upcoming book titled “The Lovely Reckless” that will be available October 2016 from Imprint.

As for “Devil’s Advocate”, it will be written by Jonathan Maberry, a New York Times bestselling author. He has won Bram Stoker awards in the past for horror and thriller titles. His novels include “Assassin’s Code”, “Dead of Night”, “Patient Zero”, and “Rot & Ruin,” Entertainment Weekly noted.

Erin Stein, publisher of Imprint, said that he became immediately hooked on the series when it first aired in 1993. “As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

The "X-Files" characters Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are heading back in time to appear in two new young adult novels all about their teenage years.

As the new season of the revamped The X-Files episodes, featuring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as the truth-seeking agents, wraps up in America, two new books in The X-Files Origins series have been announced.

Agent of Chaos and Devil's Advocate will both be set in 1979, and the stories will follow the life-changing events that inspire Scully and Mulder to become FBI agents.

Agent of Chaos will be written by bestselling author Kami Garcia, the co-author of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels, while horror novelist and Marvel Comics writer Jonathan Maberry will pen Devil's Advocate, according to EW.com.

Both books will be published simultaneously in January.

We're going to meet teenage Mulder and Scully in a new X-Files book series

Two novels will follow 15-year-old Dana Scully and 17-year-old Fox Mulder to FBI status

In a few weeks the X-Files reboot will air its final episode. Rumours of a recommission are still to be confirmed, but the truth will still be out there for fans of the show in the recently announced X-Files Origins series.

Two new books, Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate, will be part of a literary series that follows Mulder and Scully as teenagers. Each of their stories will be set in the spring of 1979, a time when “serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news.” The novels will depict life-changing events that explain how Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) became the FBI agents we know and love today.

Kami Garcia, co-author of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels and author of solo series The Legion, will write Mulder’s story in Agent of Chaos. Assassin’s Code and Dead of Night writer Jonathan Maberry will pen Scully’s story in Devil’s Advocate. Both books are set to be released by Imprint/MacMillan Children’s Publishing Group in January 2017.

“As a diehard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me,” said Erin Stein, publisher of Imprint. “Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

Series 11 is yet to be announced, but David Duchovny would definitely be interested in returning to the franchise. "I would love to," he told Ellen DeGeneres about the prospect of making more episodes, "I think we all would.

“Of all the things that have changed and the work that’s come in between, when we were together doing the show this time around, it just felt like the old show.”
