See young Mulder and Scully go camping in The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird

NIVEA SERRAO@NIVEASERRAO

POSTED ON MARCH 30, 2017 AT 10:39AM EDT

You’ve met the teenage versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, but now get ready for the child versions of the iconic duo.

Kim Smith’s upcoming picture book, The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird, sees the best pals go camping in a backyard during an overnight sleepover — complete with a fancy tent. Only, the night doesn’t go as planned as young Mulder and Scully encounter all sorts of strange lights and sounds. And as the exclusive excerpts below show, both characters react in classic fashion: Mulder attributes the strangeness to aliens, and Scully searches for a rational explanation… if there is one.

The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird hits bookshelves August 29. Preorder it here.

X-Files pop-up book will feature tiny, kid-friendly Scully and Mulder

Carol Pinchefsky
Thu, Mar 30, 2017 7:02pm

The X-Files were the 1990s adventures of conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder and skep-chick Dana Scully. The adventure continued in 2016 on television. But it’s about to continue again … as a pop-up book.

In one of the stranger tie-in books, the very adult series will be translating into a book for kiddies on August 29, 2017, by author and artist Kim Smith.

According to the blurb on Amazon,

One the most beloved TV shows of all time is now a sweet, silly, sci-fi bedtime story! In The X Files: Earth Children Are Weird, best pals Dana (Scully) and Fox (Mulder) have pitched a tent in the backyard for a sleepover. But the night is full of strange sounds, lights, and shadows. Surely there’s a rational, scientific explanation for everything . . . or is there? With beautiful illustrations of pint-sized Dana and Fox, this humorous and not-scary-at-all story will introduce the cult TV show to an entire new generation of fans.

This isn’t the only pop-up tie-in that Smith is writing. She’s also working on one about E.T.

Here’s a pic of tiny Scully and Mulder from Entertainment Weekly. They’re cute as two cute buttons.

X-Files fans got books for the teenaged versions of our heroes in 2016: Agent of Chaos by Jonathan Maberry and Devil’s Advocate by Kami Garcia. You can tell by the title which book was about which character.

“The X-Files” Children’s Popup Book Coming This Summer!

By John Squires | Apr 3, 2017

What a time to be alive, huh?

While we wait for new episodes of “The X-Files” (they could be coming as soon as 2018), we’re happy to report this week that one of the most beloved TV shows of all time has just been turned into a sweet, silly, sci-fi bedtime story for kids! Set for release on August 29th, The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird will introduce the cult TV show to an entire new generation of fans.

The 40-page hardcover popup book comes from Quirk Books. Illustrated by Kim Smith and recommended for kids 4-8 years old, it’s described as “humorous and not-scary-at-all.”

In the book…

Best pals Dana Scully and Fox Mulder have pitched a tent in the backyard for a sleepover. But the night is full of strange sounds, lights, and shadows. Surely there’s a rational, scientific explanation for everything . . . or is there?

So “The X-Files” Is Getting Turned into a Children’s Book
Nat Berman  March 31, 2017

The original The X-Files series was freaky enough to give adults nightmares.  As for children I’m pretty sure my kids would be scarred for at least a year if they caught any of those episodes.   Maybe kids are just WAY tougher these days?  I can’t think of any other explanation other than that for having an X-Files children’s book.  But apparently this is real.  Entertainment Weekly reports (via Syfy Wire) that, in August, Pop Classic Picture Books is releasing a children’s book based on The X-Files.

The X Files: Earth Children Are Weird, meant for readers ages 4 through 8, follows the curious best buds Mulder and Scully during a backyard sleepover. The pint-sized kiddos get spooked by the strange noises and shadows the night brings. Is it aliens? Are there totally rational scientific explanations?  According to the publisher’s blurb, the picture book, which is illustrated by Kim Smith, is a sweet, silly, sci-fi bedtime story that’s “humorous and not-scary-at-all.”

So I guess when kids are done reading this children’s book they can move on to young adult novels?  Eventually they’ll be able to tolerate an “X-Files” episode? I mean what’s the aim in all of this?  I don’t see one good reason for an X-Files children’s book.  I really don’t.

There's an X-Files Children's Book Coming So Your Kids Can Fall in Love with Mulder and Scully Too

Andrew Liszewski
5 minutes agoFiled to: THE X-FILES: EARTH CHILDREN ARE WEIRD: A PICTURE BOOK

If you’re a geeky parent who wants to introduce your kids to the X-Files  without fueling a year’s worth of nightmares, publisher Quirk Books will be releasing a children’s book starring kid versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, doing some detective work while camping in the backyard.

As Entertainment Weekly reveals, in The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird, featuring illustrations by Kim Smith, the young version of Scully is convinced there’s a rational explanation for the weird lights and sounds they suddenly start experiencing—while the pint-sized Mulder insists aliens are responsible for disturbing their campout.

You can pre-order The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird: A Picture Book from Amazon for about $13, but you’ll have to wait until August 27 for the book to actually arrive. Is there a chance it will arrive sooner? I want to believe.

Written by Tim Midura on Monday, April 03 2017

The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird is out August 29.

Source: Entertainment Weekly

The teenage and adult versions of Mulder and Scully have their own comics, so it's only right that the child versions of the two FBI agents get their book too, in The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird, out August 29. Illustrated by Kim Smith, the book follows Mulder and Scully as they go camping in a backyard during an overnight sleepover and the night doesn't go as planned as they encounter all sorts of strange lights and sounds.

The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird, Young Mulder and Scully Investigate in an Adorable Popup Book

by Lori Dorn at 3:57 pm on April 3, 2017

Seeking to introduce a new generation to the wonders of all that is The X-Files, Canadian illustrator Kim Smith has created The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird, a wonderful popup picture book from Quirk Books that features young versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who discover that there’s something investigate while camping outside in the backyard. Even at a young age, Scully’s need for scientific reasoning helps to keep her best friend’s imagination from running wild.

With beautiful illustrations of pint-sized Dana and Fox, this humorous and not-scary-at-all story will introduce the cult TV show to an entire new generation of fans.

An X-Files Children’s Book Is On The Way

by Matt Goodman posted on April 7, 2017

By Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

After X-Files took the television world by storm in 1993, novels began to come out, based on episodes of the show. There is an X-Files juvenile book series as well as a young adult book series based on the show. But the nerdiness doesn’t stop there. The children, for goodness sake! Don’t forget the children!

Entertainment Weekly announced this week that Quirk Books will be publishing a children’s book about young Dana Scully and Fox Mulder for the 4-8 year old range. It seems you can never start too young when it comes to initiation into the cult of geek. Illustrated by Kim Smith, the book titled “The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird” will take children on a 40 page journey through a pop-up book.

While you sit back and read an X-Files comic by Topps Comics, the children will be able to experience the world of X-Files for the first time themselves! They’ll get to read about young pals Mulder and Scully going on a backyard camping sleepover trip. Scully and Mulder hear strange sounds and inexplicable lights and shadows outside. Is there a rational explanation, or might there be alien life exploring just beyond the confines of the tent?

The hardcover pop-up book is scheduled to be released August 29, 2017 and you can pre-order the book now through various online vendors. While you wait, order an X-Files coloring book from IDW Publishing for the kids in your life (or yourself) and keep your eyes on the sky.

There’s an ‘X-Files’ Children’s Book Coming You & Your Kids Can Bond Over

By Joanna C. Valente  May 30, 2017

If you’re a self-proclaimed nerd, this children’s book is for you (and obviously, your child). People who lived through the popularity of the “X-Files” remember that Mulder and Scully were our favorite alien-seeking duo who everyone also had crushes on. While we waited with bated breath for them to finalllllly get together on the show, we were able to be creeped out, laugh, and enjoy the search for the truth that was out there.

Well now, nerd parents who loved the ’90s show (we’re ignoring the reboot) can have their kids fall in love with the storyline too—there’s a new children’s book called “The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird,” and it’s all about Mulder and Scully as kids. How adorable.

Kid-sized Mulder and Scully will be doing some detective work while camping in the backyard, so don’t worry, the book won’t give its readers nightmares their future therapists will have to unravel. Plus, what better book to encourage them to question everything around them–and develop their analytic skills?

According to Entertainment Weekly, Scully and Mulder become fascinated with the supernatural during their campout one night when Mulder insists aliens are responsible for a strange display of lights one night. Scully, of course, isn’t so easily persuaded. The book officially comes out August 27, so you can preorder the book from Amazon here.

Check out some of the illustrations here:

X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird Review

August 3, 2017
Damon Cap

X-Files characters Fox Mulder and Dana Scully have a lot of fans and they are one of the greatest television duos. With the miniseries revival in 2016, The X-Files captured a whole new audience but now they are looking even younger (8 and up) with this illustrated children bedtime story introducing the characters to the kids. There is so much to love about this book.

Before getting into the actual work of the book, after flipping through the pages the first thing that came to my mind was the quality of the paper and the thickness. This is a well put together book and screams out high quality, it should be something you could put on your coffee table and it will hold up under constant reading from the younger audience. Kim Smith really knocks it out of the park with the illustration in the book, it really is perfect, I don’t believe I need to elaborate, it just works. The story has Dana and Fox in the backyard for a sleepover and has them debating about the sounds of the night, with a surprise ending.

Enjoy The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird the end of August and look forward to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to be published on October 31st, 2017. Quirk has a growing collection of pop culture picture books that allow you to introduce children to some of the great classic movies. All ages will enjoy these books as collectibles but honestly they are a great way to introduce children to some classic movies so make sure they get read.

See the trailer for The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird

The new picture book, following Dana Scully and Fox Mulder as kids, is out Aug. 15

Isabella Biedenharn@isabella324

Back in March, we gave you a sneak peek inside The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird — a forthcoming picture book starring Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as kids on a camping trip. Of course, in true X-Files fashion, the trip takes a turn for the eerie when they start seeing strange lights and shadows and hearing weird sounds coming from outside their tent.

Now, this 2-D wonder is coming to life in the book trailer above, which EW can reveal exclusively. Earth Children Are Weird is illustrated by Kim Smith, who also brought Home Alone’s Kevin McAllister to colorful (but flattened) life in Home Alone: The Classic Illustrated Storybook.

The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird hits shelves Aug. 15, 2017.

Adorable adventures afoot in 'The X-Files' kids book

A trailer for "The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird" follows Dana Scully and Fox Mulder as kids. The book itself will be released Aug. 15.

by Bonnie Burton
August 10, 2017 7:46 AM PDT

While fans must be patient for the next installment of "The X-Files," there's another way to enjoy the sci-fi adventures of FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder -- as kids.

In this sweet bedtime story "The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird," best friends Dana and Fox hang out in a backyard tent for a sleepover.

But the night isn't peaceful, and the strange sounds, lights, and shadows outside their tent make Dana and Fox wonder if there's a mystery to explore.

Of course, Scully knows there's a rational, scientific explanation for everything, but as usual Fox isn't so sure.

In this adorable trailer, posted Tuesday, we see the beautiful illustrations by Kim Smith come to life.

Granted, this delightful kids story doesn't exactly fit the canon. In the TV show, Scully and Mulder don't meet until they're both working for the FBI, but the book is still a fun take on the duo's love for exploring the unknown.

"The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird" from Quirk Books hits shelves on Aug. 15.

An Excerpt of "The X-Files"...for Kids

Seira Wilson on August 16, 2017

When it ended last year the X-Files was one of the longest-running shows on network television with undeniably devoted fans. The show may be done, but FBI agents Scully and Mulder are cemented in our pop culture history and illustrator Kim Smith is bringing them to a new audience--kids. The X-Files Earth Children Are Weird is a bright, fun, picture book, and in it Smith shows young Scully and Mulder already engaged in their believer/skeptic dynamic during a backyard sleepover. While the characters try to sort out the evidence, readers will already be in the know, and the end has a funny twist that should produce a few chuckles. Below are a couple of pages from the book, and below that, a special illustration that Smith created exclusively for the Amazon Book Review. Here's what Smith has to say about the X-Files...

What I love most about the X-Files is the stories that have nothing to do with the main alien mystery/conspiracy. I always loved seeing what new paranormal mystery Mulder and Scully would explore, and what twists and turns the story would take. My favorite storyline in these types of episodes was the one called Bad Blood, where Mulder and Scully retell their versions of the same series of events. It gives great insight into how they view things differently, and also, it’s hilarious.

Now this illustration you won't find anywhere in the book -- it's an exclusive image of Scully and Mulder enjoying one of our favorite pastimes...reading stacks of books.

Short review: The X-Files by Kim Smith

Elementary-school-age versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully star in this endearing picture book

by: James Lovegrove

Elementary-school-age versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are camping out in the backyard at the Scully house. Scared after Dana reads him a story about aliens, Fox wonders if extraterrestrials really are visiting Earth. The two friends venture out from their tent to investigate, but each of the strange phenomena they encounter in the night — bright light, spooky shadow, giant footprint, creepy noise — turns out to have a perfectly rational explanation. Aliens don’t exist. Or do they?

This endearing picture book works as an enjoyable bedtime read while also making various neat nods to the TV series: the extensive use of flashlights; the characters having the likenesses of the actors; multiple twist endings. It would be tempting to make some sort of play on one of the show’s famous catchphrases here, but I want to believe I’m better than that.

The X-Files: Earth Children are Weird, by Kim Smith, Quirk Books, RRP£6.99, 44 pages
