X-Files: Cold Cases Will Get an Audiobook Adaptation

Gel Galang April 12, 2017

That mini tenth season of the X-Files may have been the last time we’ll be seeing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson together as Mulder and Scully (for now, at least). But that doesn’t mean it would be our last time hearing them reprise their roles.

A new Audible teaser has revealed the X-Files: Cold Cases, set to be released as an audiobook adaptation of the graphic novel with the same name by Joe Harris and Chris Carter. The graphic novel will take place in the middle of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and the 2016 revival, which means fans of the franchise will be given a glimpse into unsolved cases following the FBI security breach--meaning more conspiracies!

Apart from Duchovny and Anderson, other familiar names will be coming onboard the project. Mitch Pileggi will voice her role as FBI assistant director Walter Skinner, William B Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and the trio of Lone Gunmen conspiracy theorists, portrayed by Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood.

Check out the teaser below and see what the audiobook is about.

X-Files: Cold Cases will be available on July 18, but preorders are already available.

Cast returns for ‘X-Files: Cold Cases’

Curt Wagner
April 11, 2017

If you can’t wait for another season of The X-Files, Audible Studios is about to make you a believer again with The X-Files: Cold Cases audio book series.

On July 18, Audible Studios will release “Cold Cases” with familiar characters voiced by original actors from the TV series. Yep, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are back as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, for these tales.

Set after the events of “The X-Files: I Want to Believe,” this project provides additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to the 2016 miniseries revival.

A database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved—dubbed cold cases—by the secret department once known as The X-Files.
As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the U.S. government and forces not of this world.

Series creator Chris Carter offers creative direction for these new stories based upon Joe Harris’s graphic novels. Aural auteur Dirk Maggs adapted “Cold Cases” specifically for the audio format, creating a soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures and humming spacecraft.

Besides Scully and Mulder,“Cold Cases” drags other characters into the investigations. Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) return to help or derail the duo. The Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood) still spout their conspiracy theories.
In the clip below, titled “Security Breach,” Skinner informs Mulder and Scully about the database breach at FBI headquarters:

Fans can preorder the first book of “The X-Files: Cold Cases” for $24.95 at www.audible.com/xfiles. If you get a membership, you can purchase new audio books each month for $14.95. Audible offers a 30-day trail and you can exchange books or cancel any time.

During my latest stint on WGN Radio’s Bill and Wendy Show, Bill Leff asked about a new season of “The X-Files.” Apparently Fox is working on one, but no one is sure when that might happen. However, I wonder if the rumor Bill heard was really about the Audible books.

As Audible points out, “The truth is out there. You just have to listen.”

Audible will release “The X-Files: Cold Cases” on July 18.

‘X-Files: Cold Cases’ Audiobook Release Date, Preorder: Mulder & Scully Reunite To Fight Crime

By Pritha Paul | Apr 12, 2017 05:24 PM EDT

(Photo : Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Actors Joel McHale, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Creator/Executive Producer Chris Carter speak onstage during 'The X-Files' panel discussion at the FOX portion of the 2015 Winter TCA Tour.

Audible is releasing "The X-Files: Cold Cases" audiobook, which reunites all the main cast of the popular crime-thriller. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their roles as everyone's favorite crime-fighting duo, Mulder, and Scully respectively, as they attempt to solve the cold cases, as the title suggests.

Although not much is known about the kind of cases "The X-Files: Cold Cases" will feature, fans of the cult classic can explain some of the old, familiar faces (or rather voices) to return via the audiobook. Apart from the protagonists, the cast members who will be returning for the latest revival are William B. Davis, Mitch Pileggi, Tom Braidwood, Bruce Hardwood, and Dean Haglund, The Wrap reported.

The "The X-Files: Cold Cases" audiobook will follow a timeline that falls somewhere between the "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" in 2006 and the show's revival last year. It kicks off with a mysterious group of hackers taking possession of the X-files from the FBI headquarters. Mulder and Scully are beckoned out of retirement and needed to dive straight back into hunting down the people responsible for the data breach.

The cult classic briefly made a comeback on TV last year, after it was revived for a Season 10, which consisted of six episodes and ended on a cliffhanger, The Nerdist reported. As fans await the release of the rest of the episodes, revealing the culmination of the show, "The X-Files: Cold Cases" audiobook is something from the franchise to look forward to for the fans of the crime-thriller.

For fans who are apprehensive whether "The X-Files: Cold Cases" audiobook will have the same thrill as the TV series, the cast has pitched their views on the latest medium of revival in a promotional video. "For the hardcore fans it'll be the exact same thing," said Hardwood, who plays lone gunman John Fitzgerald Byers.

"The X-Files: Cold Cases" audiobook will be released on July 18. However, interested members of Audible can preorder the same today for free. Non-members will be charged $24.95 for pre-orders.

‘The X-Files’: Huge Update On The Further Adventures Of Scully And Mulder

by Joey Click

After a generally positive reaction to the 2016 miniseries, ‘The X-Files’ crew is coming back with alien-busting fun and even more examples of what’s out there.

There’s something out there… and it’s more The X-Flies!

Firstly, no this isn’t about more The X-Files episodes, though Fox is still game for that in the future. According to Comingsoon.net, Chris Carter’s iconic series is returning to legions of science fiction fans in audio form with “Cold Case.”

Check out the official “The X-Files: Cold Case” synopsis below, courtesy of Fox and Amazon’s Audible service:

“Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016’s miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved – dubbed cold cases – by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.”

Titled “The X-Files: Cold Case”, the event features David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson doing what they do best. Set between 2008’s I Want To Believe and last year’s miniseries return, “Cold Case” is based on the graphic novel by Joe Harris. The audio event also features series favorites Walter Skinner (Pileggi) and Lone Gunmen (Braidwood, Haglund and Harwood).

Debuting on Audible, “The X-Files: Cold Case” is a dream come true for all Believers out there. While some could dismiss Harris’ take as “fan fiction,” Chris Carter himself is involved. On top of that, the cast of the classic ’90s series is returning as well. That alone is pretty mind blowing.

“The X-Files: Cold Case” is debuting July 18, 2017. Visit Audible to pre-order the special event for $24.95 or start a free trial with the Amazon service. Either way, don’t miss this and keep looking up at the stars.

Love ‘The X-Files’? Looking forward to Cold Case? Let the other Believers know what you think in the comment section below.

Exclusive: David Duchovny Is Back as Fox Mulder in this Audio Clip from The X-Files: Cold Cases

April 19, 2017 – 12:30 PM
By Alison Abbey  @awabbey

If you’re a fan of The X-Files and are reeling from the series’ recent Netflix absence and the lingering question of “will they or won’t they”…make a new season, we have good news! X-Philes can get their fix via the audio version of The X-Files: Cold Cases, out July 18 (you can pre-order now). Set in series creator Chris Carter‘s world of The X-Files and based on graphic novels by Joe Harris, the new installment is set after the events of the series’ second film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The audiobook brings in a truly fantastic twist: The characters are each voiced by the original actors, so you can get your Mulder and Scully fix via David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson narrating their original characters. Their chemistry is as electric as ever and the story is out of this world.

If you’re on the edge of your seat and can’t wait until the summer release, check out this Parade exclusive Audible Original excerpt, performed by Duchovny (with the support of Anderson and Mitch Pileggi, returning as Deputy Director Skinner), below.

And take a look at the audiobook’s trailer, where the who’s who of The X-Files offer up the details on this spooky new recording.

Thought you guys would enjoy this behind-the-scenes pic of 2/3 of your favorite Lone Gunmen at work in the studio on THE X-FILES: COLD CASES audio experience coming from Audible next month (Adaptations of THE X-FILES: SEASON 10 comics I wrote by the great Dirk Maggs, for IDW). I've now got rough mixes of the entire first volume to listen to until then (still surreal hearing Duchovny, Anderson, Davis, Pileggi, et al doing this).

Hear Mulder and Scully go on a 'foreign assignment' in X-Files: Cold Cases

Listen to Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny voice their characters for Audible and get exclusive details on the SDCC panel

Mulder and Scully may be returning for even more X-Files adventures, but they’ll also be back for a new one set before the recent revival. (Though still after The X-Files: I Want to Believe.)

In The X-Files: Cold Cases — which you can listen to in an exclusive clip below — series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their roles as the iconic duo who team up once again to look into a data breach at the FBI headquarters that has resulted in a mysterious new group having access to old X-Files investigations. The full-cast audio dramatization is based on Joe Harris and Chris Carter’s graphic novels of the same name and sees many original cast members reprising their roles, including Mitch Pileggi as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood as the Lone Gunmen.

That’s not the only treat X-Files fans can look forward to in the coming weeks. Audible will be hosting a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year on July 22, featuring Dirk Maggs, the producer behind Cold Cases as well as audio drama productions of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Alien: Out of the Shadows, and series (and audio drama) star Duchovny himself.

Chris Sanders/Audible

Chris Sanders/Audible

In addition, listeners will be able to access Audible’s X-Files Face Morph, which is an activation where users can pre-select an audio clip from The X-Files: Cold Cases as their face morphs into a different X-Files character, which they can then share a video of (audio overlay included) on social media. Anyone looking for Maggs’ autograph will be able to head to the Audible booth where he’ll be signing X-Files posters for an hour each day from July 21-23.

X-Files: Cold Cases will be available for purchase July 18. Preorder the audiobook here. For more on SDCC 2017, check out our schedule of all the panels here. See photos of Duchovny and Anderson in the recording booth, above.

The X-Files season 11 won’t have a Comic-Con panel, but franchise will

July 9, 2017

Here’s a little bit of good news and bad news when it comes to The X-Files and San Diego Comic-Con. Let’s start with the bad: There is no official panel promoting the upcoming eleventh season of the show. Given that this is not premiering until January, that isn’t a huge shock. There’s a lot of production that needs to be done before then, and there may not be all that much to share about the story at the time of the convention. (With that said, we do hope that there is something when it comes to Mulder and Scully’s child revealed soon.)

The good news is that there will be one event at the convention tied to the show, and it will feature an appearance from series star David Duchovny. David will be making an appearance on Saturday, July 22 at 6:45 p.m. in Room 6A for a discussion with Dirk Maggs all about The X-Files: Cold Cases, an original drama for Audible that gives you an even further sense of the entire universe. Here’s what the official site for the show has to say about the discussion:

“Liquefying aliens. Hissing creatures. Humming spacecraft. This is the otherworldly soundscape of The X-Files: Cold Cases -an Audible original drama that reunites David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and a cast of familiar voices from the iconic series. Duchovny and Cold Cases producer Dirk Maggs talk about revisiting the rich, sonic tapestry of the X-Files universe, what it means to tell more of Mulder and Scully’s story, and how fans can join the duo’s investigations and experience them like never before by putting on a pair of headphones. Fans may even find out what’s canon and what’s not.”

This should be exciting to you just because we’re moving back to an era where listening is becoming more and more important for entertainment. Podcasts have taken a pretty prominent place in pop culture these days, and audio-books have also become more accessible now that there are such a wide array of different ways in which people can listen to them. Admittedly, we are also very much the poster child for all things audio given that we walk everywhere and are constantly listening to something in one form or another.

The X-Files will start filming later this summer in Vancouver leading up to the premiere; hopefully, there will be some more news to discuss when it comes to the show soon over at the link here. (Photo: Fox.)

'The X-Files' Has a New Case! Mulder and Scully Return in Audiobook Form

Marisa Roffman July 10, 2017 10:00 am

Ed Araquel/FOX
Duchovny and Anderson

The truth is still out there. While The X-Files is returning to TV for 10 more episodes on Fox in 2018, fans don’t have to wait that long to get another dose of FBI Special Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they unravel government conspiracies and investigate the unknown.

The X-Files: Cold Cases, an audiobook adaptation of select stories from the 2013–2015 IDW “Season 10” comic run (available via Audible.com on July 18), picks up shortly after the events of the 2008 film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Mulder and Scully are living together under assumed names but then find themselves pulled back into their old world when a mysterious hack threatens their safety.

Not only do Duchovny and Anderson voice their parts, but several other original cast members also lend their voices to these stories, including Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Skinner), William B. Davis (Cigarette Smoking Man) and the Lone Gunmen trio of Dean Haglund (Langly), Tom Braidwood (Frohike) and Bruce Harwood (Byers). “Hearing David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi reprise the dynamic between Agent Mulder and Walter Skinner as they clash at the FBI is thrilling,” says comics author Joe Harris, who collaborated with writer Dirk Maggs to adapt the audiobook.

Though the story isn’t connected to the present-day series, “the mythology is interspersed with some original monster ideas I created, as well as a sequel to the iconic [1994] episode ‘The Host,’ which introduced the monster Flukeman, who we’re bringing back,” Harris says.

The audiobook also features the revival of many characters presumed dead after the original X-Files ended in 2002. “It is a mystery born out of this question: Why are all of these classic characters who met their demise back?” Harris says. “What seems like fan service—a desire to see these characters up and walking again—is actually focused on a [plot] point,” he adds. “This exceeded my expectations as a creator, and even more so as a fan.”

THE X-FILES: COLD CASES in this week's TV Guide!

30 minutes of interview distilled to a couple of soundbites (but a good interviewer is a documentarian and is "shooting" the documentary to "cut" together as the thesis forms -- and doesn't just transcribe said interview). That said, I wish some of the other details re: my collaborators and the comics were included. Plus, this isn't really an "audiobook" read by a reader. It's more a experience (Dirk Maggs calls it an "Audio Movie" which is way more descriptive and accurate -- with sweeping sound design, and lots of additions to bring out the drama besides the interplay between Gillian, David, Mitch, William and TLG).

Also: we're on Page 3 damnit. GOT be damned, we're right up front.

‘The X-Files: Cold Cases’: New Trailer for the Audio Drama

Ethan Alter
July 17, 2017

Production on a new season of The X-Files is beginning to heat up, but it’s still going to be a few months before we see fresh adventures starring Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on our TV screens. Enter The X-Files: Cold Cases, an all-new audio drama that will be released via Audible on July 18. Yahoo TV is premiering a suitably chilling trailer for Cold Cases that gives you a taste of what’s in store for your favorite alien-chasing FBI agents, including a trip to the sewers that’s bound to make your blood run cold.

And yes, those are the voices of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson you’re hearing in that teaser. The X-Files stars are joined by fan favorites like Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis in this four-hour collection of stories adapted from some of Mulder and Scully’s graphic novel adventures written by Joe Harris. Continuity-obsessed fans should also know that Cold Cases fills in the time gap between the end of the 2008 X-Files features, I Want to Believe, and the launch of Fox’s event miniseries in 2016, depicting how the duo emerged from the proverbial wilderness to reclaim their FBI badges. The truth is out there… and you’ll soon be able to hear it.

The X-Files: Cold Cases premieres July 18 on Audible. The first nine seasons of The X-Files are streaming on Hulu.

Exclusive: Hackers get behind the FBI’s firewall in ‘X-Files: Cold Cases’

"The truth is out there. You just have to listen."

11:00 am EDT, July 17, 2017
by Brandi Delhagen

We haven’t seen (or heard) the last of the iconic duo David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as Mulder and Scully on The X-Files series. Check out our exclusive clip from The X-Files: Cold Cases!

X-Files: Cold Cases is based on the graphic novels by Joe Harris and takes place after the feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe that premiered in 2008. Although it takes place after the film, it does take place before the 2016 series revival.

Here is the official teaser for ‘The X-Files: Cold Cases’ from Audible

This Audible Original is a full-cast dramatization that brings back the voices of our favorite Agents, Mulder and Scully. Amazon says the audiobook,

“provides additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016’s miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved – dubbed cold cases – by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.”

Hardcore fans will also remember the likes of Walter Skinner (Mitch PIleggi), the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), and the Lone Gunmen Melvin Frohike, Richard “Ringo” Langly and John Fitzgerald Byers (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood) who will also be making voice appearances in The X-Files: Cold Cases.

Exclusive clip of ‘The X-Files: Cold Cases’ — ‘Under Attack’ (FBI staff, Skinner)

In this clip, hackers get behind the FBI’s firewall.

We were also given an exclusive quote from Mitch Pileggi, known to most of us as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner!

“I think what fans are going to like about this project are the voices of Mulder, Scully, The Cigarette Smoking Man and myself. They’re going to be hearing characters that they thought were gone and have now been brought back. Fans are really going to enjoy having all these characters back in new storylines, and talking more about the invasion, the faceless aliens, and the clones. There’s a lot of really good material here that the fans are going to enjoy relishing. They will be able to use their own imagination.”

While fans may have wanted some news about continuing The X-Files revival from last year, it’s good to know that stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are not shying away from playing Mulder and Scully again, albeit through voice acting.

Listening to them in audiobook form is almost like a throwback to the times when the original series aired on television. Fans will definitely appreciate The X-Files: Cold Cases.

The X-Files: Cold Cases will be released exclusively on Audible on July 18. You can pre-order on Audible, here.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson Perform The X-Files: Cold Cases for Audible

Exclusive Original Audio Drama Features Stars of the Award-Winning TV Series in an Adaptation by Award-Winning Producer Dirk Maggs

July 18, 2017 09:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

NEWARK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Audible Studios, a production arm of Audible.com, today announced the release of The X-Files: Cold Cases, an exclusive original audio production starring Golden Globe award-winner David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Golden Globe and Emmy award-winner Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully. Joining Duchovny and Anderson are series regulars Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), William B. Davis (Cigarette Smoking Man), and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood (the Lone Gunmen). The recording is based on the fan-favorite graphic novels by Joe Harris, which were created with direction from series creator Chris Carter. Adapted for audio by aural auteur Dirk Maggs, this thrilling addition to the X-Files oeuvre is now available for download at Audible.com/xfiles.

“Narrating The X-Files: Cold Cases and bringing the X-Files universe to the audio format for Audible has been a whole new experience,” said Gillian Anderson. “This is the very first time one of Joe Harris’ graphic novels has been made into an audio project and fans will lose themselves in this rich story.”

Adapted and directed by Maggs, best-known for his work on Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (BBC), Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere (BBC) and Alien: River of Pain (Audible), The X-Files: Cold Cases provides a never-before-told backstory following the events of the film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Along with the series’ iconic theme music, The X-Files: Cold Cases features an otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, as the adventures of Mulder and Scully come to life in an electrifying new medium.

“Audible Studios has conjured the world of Mulder and Scully and The X-Files with the enthusiastic participation of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and other members of the classic cast,” said producer Dirk Maggs. “These adventures, based on Joe Harris’s stories, are intense, fast-moving and witty, and nothing beats the experience of losing yourself in an audio universe.”

“Fans of the X-Files TV show and the graphic novels will be enthralled by the other worldly heroes, monsters and villains in these stories,” said Audible EVP and Publisher Beth Anderson. “Uncovering the truth as events unfold in The X-Files Cold Cases is an entertaining listening experience like no other.”

The X-Files series originally premiered in September 1993, rising from a breakout sci-fi favorite to one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award. Twentieth-Century Fox’s reboot of the X-Files TV series has brought more critical acclaim; Season 11 is currently in production, slated for 2018.

IDW Publishing publishes more than 20 years’ worth of The X-Files graphic novels, and continues to release new volumes of paranormal mystery.

With a 30-day membership trial at Audible, new listeners can enjoy any one audiobook, including The X-Files: Cold Cases, free.

In addition to David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Sean Penn, Nick Offerman, Zachary Quinto, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, Emma Thompson, James Franco, and Jesse Eisenberg. Audible Studios has won a Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and has also been recognized with the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, most recently for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair. Audible invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2016, Audible members downloaded an average of 17 books over the course of the year. More than half of new Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.

David Duchovny on how The X-Files: Cold Cases 'embraced the humor' of the show

The FBI’s most unwanted agents are back on the case.

In new audio drama The X-Files: Cold Cases, available today on Audible, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their iconic roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who are pulled back into the field when a data breach at FBI headquarters gives a mysterious group access to their old case files. And the resulting investigation brings them into contact with a number of old friends: In addition to Duchovny and Anderson, original cast members Mitch Pileggi (FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner), William B. Davis (the Cigarette Smoking Man), and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood (the Lone Gunmen) all return.

“Since we started 24 years ago, there have been so many iterations of the show and so many different kinds of expressions of the show,” Duchovny tells EW. “I remember way back when, I was so pleased that there was a comic book. Like, ‘Oh my god, it’s a comic book for The X-Files! Now I can retire.’”

It’s fitting, then, that Cold Cases is based on a series of graphic novels by Joe Harris, with creative direction from X-Files creator Chris Carter. The stories were adapted for audio by producer Dirk Maggs, who will appear with Duchovny on a July 22 panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

In advance of that panel, EW caught up with Duchovny to get the scoop on what it was like to reimagine Mulder’s dry humor over audio.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How was this project pitched to you?
DAVID DUCHOVNY: As technology progresses, as the way in which people purchase and digest a product has changed, now I’m no longer surprised at whatever form a beloved show, or a show that people want to see, takes. Also, the last few years, I’ve kind of gotten into podcasts myself, and even though this is not quite a podcast, it feels a little like that… So it just made sense to me. When it was pitched to me I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a good idea.’ It reminded me of — I also will sometimes listen to old-time radio programming in my car, you know, old-time serials like The Shadow, shows like that. Even though I’m not quite that old that I grew up listening to them. But if for some reason my car is tuned into the station, it’s kind of riveting. It’s in between an audiobook and a radio play.

Were you familiar with the particular comics that this audiobook is based on?
No, I’m happy that there are comics, but I’ve never read them. But I was impressed by the writing and the grasp of the character. The truth of the matter is there really haven’t been that many writers on The X-Files over the 24 years. Even going into this new season, it’s a lot of the same people, which is a testament to Chris’ loyalty and his taste, really. Once you venture out of that, I certainly would be afraid sometimes that people wouldn’t get it. But I think they had a really good grasp of the character and of the kinds of stories, of the humor, which is another challenge to do when it’s just your voice and it’s not your full expressive repertoire.

Did that change your approach to Mulder as a character at all?
A little bit… You tend to, I don’t want to say over-act, but you tend to maybe push a little harder, because your voice is really the only thing that’s going to carry whatever it is that you’re trying to express. The best part of it is that I didn’t have to memorize all that crap [Laughs]. I can just read it right off the page and sound like an intelligent person.

Obviously The X-Files continues to be relevant in 2017. Was there anything about this story that felt especially timely to you?
I think the science is up to date, and that was always one of the interesting things about The X-Files. As science has progressed in the last 24 years, as technology has progressed, obviously, in the last 24 years, a show like The X-Files was able to embrace that and even push it a little further into what may be coming in the next five or 10 years. I think that’s one of the reasons why a show like The X-Files has continued on. The last movie that we did [The X-Files: I Want to Believe] in 2008, that was a head transplant! Or an attempted head transplant. Which sounds ridiculous, and you laugh, and I laugh when I say the term “head transplant,” but at this point, I don’t think it’s very far off. So we go from ridiculous science fiction to science.

You’ve talked in the past about how easy it is for you to slip back into character when you’re acting opposite Gillian Anderson. How was it recording as Mulder when you weren’t opposite Gillian?
It’s very similar. I mean, at this point, [Mulder is] a character that I can just kind of feel physically in and of myself. And if the writing is in character, if the writing makes sense character-wise, then it’s easy. And I think what these guys got was, they embraced the humor that Mulder can bring, so I’m always gung-ho for that. It was a different challenge to be able to do it — I could never have a deadpan humorous side to him. The deadpan is taken away from me on audio. So I guess he may be a little less deadpan to sell whatever jokes are coming his way.

Did you have any recording sessions with other cast members, or was it all solo?
All solo. All three blocks from my house. They couldn’t have made it easier for me. The directors and producers that I worked with were super energetic and into it. It can get a little airless if it’s just you sitting in a room reading stuff, so they were very smart. They know how to keep the energy up.

Listen to an Exclusive Preview of the New X-Files Audio Drama

BY Shaunacy Ferro
July 18, 2017

Audible / Chris Sanders

In April, Audible announced that it would be releasing an audio drama based on The X-Files, a sort of prequel to the latest TV revival in audio form. Now The X-Files: Cold Cases is finally here, and you can listen to two exclusive clips from it below.

Complete with voicing by members of the original cast, the plot takes place between 2008's (terrible) The X-Files: I Want to Believe and last year's revival series. In “An Old Acquaintance,” you’ll hear Agent Mulder and get a sneak peek into the appearance of a mysterious figure with a prosthetic arm. (Alex Krycek, perhaps?)

Obviously, the best part of the original X-Files is the banter and simmering tension between Agents Mulder and Scully, so here’s another tidbit featuring Scully trying to prod Mulder into their scheduled FBI Reinstatement Training. You know you've been craving those snarky Mulder comebacks.

The four-plus hour audio drama is no replacement for the TV show, however. You just can’t substitute David Duchovny’s smirking face. From the previews, it seems like the script is a little cheesy, and the actors won’t be getting any awards for their performances. But then again, The X-Files never shied away from camp.

Audible / Chris Sanders

The audio is out there, and you can get it for $25 on Audible.

Listen to Mulder Search for Scully in the THE X-FILES Audiobook (Exclusive)

Posted by Blair Marnell on July 19, 2017

Before Fox ordered a revival season of The X-Files, fans had to turn to the comic book realm for the further adventures of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Under the direction of series creator Chris Carter, writer Joe Harris and artist Michael Walsh continued the world of the show in The X-Files: Season 10 comic book. Adding to the off-screen universe of the series, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have gone on to reprise their iconic roles in a new audio drama.

Earlier this week, Audible released The X-Files: Cold Cases, a full-cast audio play adapted by Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). From what we know about the audiobook. it appears to be based upon Harris and Walsh’s first story arc, which featured Mulder and Scully up against an enigmatic group that seemed to use their psychic powers to abduct Scully. Today, we’ve got an exclusive preview from Cold Cases that catches up to Mulder and his boss, Agent Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), as they attempt to find Scully. However, the trail has already gone cold.

Duchovny, Anderson, and Pileggi weren’t the only performers to return for this audio series. William B. Davis is reprising his role as the Cigarette Smoking Man, while Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund aren’t letting a little thing like death get in the way of the Lone Gunmen making an appearance as well.

The X-Files: Cold Cases is available here, and if the subsequent episodes are made, more characters from the original series could also appear. Which long-lost X-Files characters would you like to see get a comeback in the audiobook? Let us know in the comment section below!

Comic-Con 2017: The X-Files: Cold Cases the Show's Actors to Adapt a Comic Book

David Duchovny brings the new X-Files Audiobook to SDCC.

David Duchovny came to San Diego Comic-Con to promote a new audiobook, The X-Files: Cold Cases, available now from digital bookseller Audible.

Set soon after the 2008 feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Cold Cases was adapted by Dirk Maggs from the IDW comic book series The X-Files: Season 10, written by Joe Harris. The story begins with Agents Mulder and Scully living together in the witness protection program and under assumed names. Drawn back into their work with the X-Files, they are soon reunited with old friends and foes, including Walter Skinner, Cigarette Smoking Man, and the Lone Gunmen. Although Duchovny was the only actor in attendance, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood all portray their iconic characters for the project.

Duchovny and fellow panelist Maggs both likened Cold Cases to old-time radio dramas like The Shadow" which required the listener to use their imagination to fill in the visual details of what they were listening too. Similarly, Duchovny was also reminded of the early days of shooting the series, when cinematographer John S. Bartley would compensate for the show's then meager effects budget by using low-lighting.

The comic was written with Chris Carter's input and blessing, but before there were any plans to revive The X-Files for television. Although it may not always line-up completely with the television continuity (e.g., the fate of the Lone Gunmen), Maggs and Duchovny both assured the assembled X-Philes that Cold Cases captures the tone of the series and praised Joe Harris for creating a story frightening and compelling enough to be told in this format, with no special effects to fall back on. Duchovny also pointed out that shippers should enjoy the story, as it takes place while Mulder and Scully are still living as man and wife.

It was also announced during the panel that a second audiobook, The X-Files: Stolen Lives, will be released this fall.
