Things We Saw Today: The X-Files Are Back (But Not in the Way You Might Think)

by Keisha Hatchett | 5:39 pm, April 10th, 2017

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are set to reprise their roles as Dana Mulder and Fox Scully, just not on television. The beloved duo is lending their voices to a new audiobook titled X-Files: Cold Cases, based on the graphic novels by Joe Harris and Chris Carter.

Set after the last movie but just before the 2016 TV revival, the book will offer up some more backstory into why the agents have re-emerged after going into seclusion. After an unknown group gains access to unsolved investigations by the X-Files during a data breach at FBI quarters, the two are forced to take on a major conspiracy that involved not only their former department, but the U.S. government and forces unknown to this world as well.

The book is slated to hit Audible on July 18 and also features voices from Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood. (via Gizmodo)

Duchovny, Anderson And The X-Files Cast Return For Audio Of Graphic Novels

Posted by Dan Wickline April 10, 2017

Audible Studios is bringing back David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and the rest of the original X-Files cast for a new production – The X-Files: Cold Cases. Based on a series of graphic novels by Joe Harris, the audio recordings will be adapted by Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) with creative direction by series creator Chris Carter.

Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016’s miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved – dubbed cold cases – by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Fox is still working on a follow up to the 2016 mini-series.

Aubible Originals releases The X-Files: Cold Cases on July 18.

‘The X-Files’ Season 10 To Get Audiobook Treatment Starring Duchovny, Anderson (Video)

“The X-Files: Cold Cases” brings the gang back together this summer

Carli Velocci | April 10, 2017 @ 3:41 PM

“The X-Files” is returning… with Mulder and Scully… played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Excited yet?

The cult classic will be making a comeback once again with a lot of the original cast in tow, only it’ll be in a different format than we’re used to — an audiobook.

Audible announced Monday that it’ll be releasing “X-Files: Cold Cases,” an audiobook featuring Mulder, Scully and a lot of the other series players – including Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Tom Braidwood, Bruce Hardwood, and Dean Haglund as the Lone Gunmen — that will flesh out the time between “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” in 2006 and the Season 10 revival.

“Cold Cases” will be based on “The X-Files: Season 10” graphic novels by Joe Harris and takes place following a data breach at the FBI that gives a mysterious group access to the X-Files. This forces Mulder and Scully out of anonymity and back into the conspiracy-laden, extraterrestrial world from the show.

In a teaser video released by Audible, the cast comes together to hype the audiobook, which they ensure will feel just as comfortable for the fans as it was for them to get back into the characters.

“For the hardcore fans it’ll be the exact same thing,” said Bruce Hardwood, who plays Lone Gunman John Fitzgerald Byers.

The audiobook was made in part with series creator Chris Carter, who provided creative direction, and Dirk Maggs, who is best known for radio dramas such as “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” on BBC Radio 4.

“The X-Files” fans have never been starved for content to consume. The show premiered in 1993 and ran into 2002 for nine seasons, along with two films and a spinoff “Lone Gunmen” series. Since the show ending, there have been comics, along with the maligned 2016 revival. “The X-Files Season 11,” also by Harris, was published by IDW starting in Aug. 2015.

Fans will get to hear the audiobook starting on July 18. Pre-orders are now open for $24.95 or are free with an Audible membership.

The X-Files Graphic Novels: A Visual Guide

Okay, in order to avoid confusion, let me explain a little bit about the graphic novels, what the hell is happening in each one, and why this Audible adaptation is going to be so awesome (in my humble opinion).

They are making the adaptation from The X-Files Season 10, written by Joe Harris. That’s this series, published by IDW in 2013, which takes place sometime after IWTB. That’s all I’m going to say about a timeline, because when it was first published, the actual Revival (Season 10 of the television series) wasn’t even being talked about, so IWTB is our only frame of reference in terms of when these events happened. In it, Mulder and Scully are still living under assumed names, but they’re living together. Scully is a doctor, Mulder is still kind of a homebody, and then something happens that brings them back into the search for the Truth. Quite a few of our old favorite monsters, villains, and secondary characters make a comeback, including the Flukeman, the Peacocks, the Long Gunmen, and Gibson Praise. And again, let me stress…Mulder and Scully are STILL TOGETHER ROMANTICALLY:

The above series is NOT to be confused with The X-Files, which is also written by Joe Harris and was published by IDW in 2016. The X-Files, pictured below, is a completely different storyline from the one pictured above. It’s a Revival-era series which takes place sometime after the My Struggle I, meaning that it includes the estrangement. This is a story about Revival-era Mulder and Scully, and encompasses the whole breakup and all that jazz, and THIS is the series that Scully has started to see someone else:

‘X-Files’: Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny Reprise Scully and Mulder in Audiobook Episode

Erin Nyren

April 10, 2017 | 04:40PM PT

Audible Studios announced on Monday that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be starring in a new audio production titled “The X-Files: Cold Cases,” reprising their original roles as special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

The production is based on Joe Harris’s graphic novels, which are set after the events of the 2008 film “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” and provide more details about what transpired between the movie and Fox’s 2016 miniseries revival. “X-Files” creator Chris Carter will serve as executive producer and creative director. Dirk Maggs, who previously worked on “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Alien: Out of the Shadows,” adapted the novels to audio format.

The audiobook gets its name from the unsolved X-Files “cold cases” that have been accessed by an unknown group during an FBI database breach. Mulder and Scully are forced to come out of hiding and face a growing conspiracy involving the US government and otherworldly forces as allies and enemies thought gone begin to reappear.

Audible released an excerpt of the audiobook on Soundcloud. In the two-minute excerpt, Scully can be heard running and breathing hard while attempting to contact Deputy Director Walter Skinner to report that she is being pursued by chanting hooded members. She says that she has a gunshot wound in her left arm and believes the chanting to be a psychic attack. We hear just enough to know that Scully is in even more danger before the excerpt fades to the X-Files theme.

Other original cast members return as well: Mitch Pileggi as Assistant Director Walter Skinner, William B. Davis as the nemesis known as Cigarette Smoking Man, and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood as beloved conspiracy trio the Lone Gunmen.

The audiobook will be released on July 18th and is available for preorder now.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson Reunite for X-FILES Audiobook
Television – Nerdist

Last year, Fox brought back The X-Files for a six-episode run that left fans on a big cliffhanger with no resolution in sight. And while we’re still waiting for word about a fresh order of new episodes, series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are already set to reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in The X-Files: Cold Cases, a new audio drama from Audible.

The X-Files: Cold Cases is based on The X-Files: Season 10 comic book series by writer Joe Harris and artist Michael Walsh. That comic was produced before Fox commissioned the revival series, so it is out-of-continuity with the television show despite input from X-Files creator Chris Carter. For the new audio version, Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) adapted Harris and Walsh’s initial storyline, which finds Mulder and Scully forced out of hiding when their former associates are targeted by an enigmatic group.

In a newly released video from Audible, Duchovny and Anderson teased their returns, but they aren’t the only cast members coming back. Mitch Pileggi will once again play Walter Skinner, alongside William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund reprising their roles as the Lone Gunmen.

If Audible continues to adapt the comic book storyline beyond the initial Cold Cases, then several other X-Files characters could potentially return as well. It’s an exciting possibility for fans of the series, and we’d love to see that happen!

Audible will release The X-Files: Cold Cases on July 18.

Are you up for more Mulder and Scully audio adventures? Declassify your thoughts in the comment section below!

Is Agent Mulder actually a crazy person, though?

While you wait for X-Files season 11 renewal, here’s a worthy project…

Alas, there is still no word on an X-Files season 11 renewal, but we’re not giving up hope there for a number of different reasons. For one, the show drew enormous ratings when it aired back in 2016. Also, there’s a new project coming your way via Audible.

As the video below reveals, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and many other familiar faces from the franchise are going to be lending their voices to X-Files: Cold Cases premiering a little bit later this summer. This summer series is going to be based on Joe Harris and Chris Carter’s graphic novels, and you can see the first official video teaser for it below courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

The stories that you get here take place following the events of the X-Files: I Want to Believe feature film, but before the season 10 revival series that featured Mulder and Scully back in action after many years apart. While this may not offer too many clues as to what is coming on the series (could we actually get something more on their child?), we do feel like this should provide a few cool Easter eggs and set up the future of the series rather nicely. We know that for us, there is a heck of a lot to be excited about with this. Any chance for more official X-Files canon content is something that we’re going to be thrilled to have.

In getting back to the future of the franchise now, Fox still has a solid month to figure out precisely what they are going to be doing with the show, and we remain as optimistic as ever that they will figure out something so that they can make an announcement. We know that the actors are busy, but wouldn’t it be nice if there was a ten-episode season 11 that is made available at some point in early 2018? We’d be surprised if we got it before then, but one of the things that we’ve learned is that you really can’t rule anything out. We’re still continually surprised that we are able to discuss things related to the show here in 2017. Two years ago, would you have ever imagined that?

If you do want to get some further news when it comes to The X-Files, be sure to head over to the link here! We’re going to get some other news (hopefully) later this year, so stay tuned. (Photo: Fox.)

The X-Files' Cast Reunites for a Creepy New Audiobook

Science Fiction > Sci-Fi Books
Jonathan KeshMonday, 10 April 2017

After several years of nothing happening, the recent tenth season of The X-Files proved that the series is still out there. And while there's no official word on a season 11 just yet (only some unofficial words), Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully will be returning in an audiobook out this summer, with their respective actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson providing the voices.

Amazon's Audible just announced the new spin-off, called X-Files: Cold Cases, which is due out this summer and lists an impressive amount of actors from the original show. Beyond Duchovny and Anderson as the the stars, Cold Cases is bringing on Mitch Pileggi as FBI Assistant Director Skinner and William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, while also including Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood as the lovable conspiracy theorist trio "The Lone Gunmen."

And unlike a regular old book, Audible's official description is promising a "mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft," to the point where this is beginning to sound more like a radio play than an audiobook. The actual story is based on Joe Harris' X-Files comics and graphic novels (which he's been writing since 2013), and centers around a database breach at the FBI by some mysterious group who wants to exploit X-Files cases. It's set between 2008's I Want to Believe movie and the recent 2016 show.

Here's a teaser featuring most of the cast:

Much like the old show, the recent revival had some very strong points (like "The Were-Monster") and some low points (like whatever forgettable monster was in the next episode), so it's difficult to predict how good the coming audiobook is going to be. But when the X-Files is good, it's some of the best paranormal drama on television, so Cold Cases could easily recapture that magic for the talking books market.

The X-Files: Cold Cases will come out July 18, 2017.

Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny reprise ‘X-Files’ roles for audiobook

The X-Files” are back...kind of.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, stars of the original series and the reboot, will reunite for an audiobook called “The X-Files: Cold Cases,” based on the TV show.

“Set after the events of ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’ and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016's miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved — dubbed cold cases — by the secret department once known as The X-Files,” the audiobook description reads.

“As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.”

Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), William B. Davis (the Cigarette Smoking Man), Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood (the Lone Gunmen) also lent their voices to the recording.

The new story, based on Joe Harris’ graphic novels, takes place between the “I Want to Believe” movie and the 2016 TV revival.

“The X-Files: Cold Cases” will be released on July 18 and is available for pre-order on Audible.

Gillian Anderson’s & David Duchovny’s Voices Return for An X-Files Case on Audiobook
By Tolly Wright

X-Files fans who still want to believe there’s more supernatural mystery stories to be told, the truth is out there. And by “out there,” we mean another X-Files mystery in the form of an audiobook. According to Variety, The X-Files: Cold Cases is an upcoming Audible Studios original production starring the voice talents of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as (who else?) Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. The story takes place after the 2008 movie The X-Files: I Want to Believe but before the events in 2016’s 6-episode 10th season. As Scully and Mulder set out to solve the F.B.I. cold case, which might just have a sci-fi element to it, they’ll also run into returning characters Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) and the Long Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood). The audiobook drops July 18, which is plenty of time to make your way through the 208 television episodes to brush up on the mythology.

New ‘X-Files’ Reunion Will Shock Longtime Fans

By Dave Taylor • 9 hours ago

Scully and Mulder will be back this summer... but in a format few fans might expect.

This might be the most surprising, and welcome, reunion in recent memory.

It’s been more than 20 years since the ground-breaking cult hit “The X Files” aired on Fox. It enjoyed a nine season run, from Sept. 1993 to May 2002. The episodic show revolved around the investigations of FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson)..

The six-episode ‘X-Files’ season 10 brought the show back for ecstatic fans.

Fans remember that in addition to the crime of the week, there was also an overarching conspiracy that involved aliens invading the Earth and masquerading as humans. Were they really here? Who would believe their findings if they did get incontrovertible proof of the aliens? And who was “Smoking Man” (William B. Davis), who always seemed to be on the fringe of the more complicated story lines?

Fourteen years after the show ended, a tenth season aired on Fox to a lukewarm reception by fans. That doesn’t include two feature films tied to the series. “The X Files” arrived in 1998, during the height of the show’s popularity. “The X Files: I Want To Believe,” which proved a box office disappointment, debuted in 2008.

Are we done with “The X-Files?” Hardly!

Fans are still fascinated by the bigger conspiracy underlying the entire show. They hope that long-simmering romantic spark between Scully and Mulder will burst into flames.

Which is why Audible Studios is going to find great success with its upcoming July 18 release of “The X Files: Cold Cases.”

The truth is still out there thanks to a new Audible Studios original.

The Audible Original production stars Duchovny, Anderson and the rest of the original TV cast.

Based on the “X-Files” graphic novels by Joe Harris and with creative direction from show creator Chris Carter, “Cold Cases” will represent a whole new story area for fans.

It’s set in the era between when the last episode of the show and the first episode of the 2016 revival miniseries.

“Cold Cases” will explain what brought Mulder and Scully out of reclusion.

We hear that it’ll involve an unknown group hacking into the FBI database to access and capitalize on the unsolved investigations of the X Files group. Expect a full soundtrack with sound effects and original music, too.

It’s called ‘X-Files: Cold Cases,’ and the first clip will creep you out.

Grab your headphones, The X-Files fans, because Audible Studios is releasing an X-Files audiobook starring the original cast! In addition to bringing back Gillian Anderson as the skeptical Agent Dana Scully and David Duchovny as true believer Agent Fox Mulder, X-Files: Cold Cases also beings back Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner and William B. Davis as the Smoking Man, plus Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood as the Lone Gunmen.

Yes, it’s true! Here’s a brief description via Audible:

Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. Featuring a mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, listeners get to experience the duo’s investigations like never before.

Liquefying aliens? Holy UFO’s that sounds amazing.
The audio series will pick up where the 2008 film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, left off, but take place before the events of the 2016 miniseries revival.

Watch the Official Teaser for X-Files: Cold Cases here:

Here’s the actual plot, according to the Audible website:

A database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved – dubbed cold cases – by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Audible will release X-Files: Cold Cases on July 18th, but if you want to have a listen right now, Rolling Stone has an exclusive and super-creepy X-Files: Cold Cases excerpt available to creep you out immediately.

Pre-orders of X-Files: Cold Cases are available now via Audible.

The truth is still out there, y’all!
