David Duchovny may be returning to television screens next January for a new revival season of The X-Files, but the performer admits he’s never really liked science fiction.

Speaking to the Illawarra Mercury ahead of his Australian concert tour next year, Duchovny said he’s never liked it and probably never will regardless of the popularity of the show

“I’m not a superhero comic book guy,” he said.

“I always approached it (The X-Files) as a drama or sometimes as a comedy, to me that’s what it was and the elements of science fiction just added to the drama.”

The show first premiered in 1993 and ran for nine seasons, however, Duchovny had no idea it would become such a cult hit.

In 2016 a revival series spawned to great success with a second 10-part series scheduled to air in the US from January.

“I wasn’t a fan of science fiction so I actually assumed most of the world was like me, I was wrong. And now we live in a world where most of the big Hollywood revenue is driven by superhero, comic book, science fiction,” he said.

“Twenty-five years ago … we would have been a dark horse or kind of a niche show, now everything else is niche.”

The 57-year-old has added writer, producer, director, novelist and now singer-songwriter to his resume.

In February he will bring his band to Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul for one night only with a range of songs inspired by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen and R.E.M.

“It really has been a labour of love,” Duchovny said.

“I really just started playing guitar in the last decade and writing songs in the last three, four, five years.

“Having done so much work in other areas, to have the excitement of something new is different.”
