'The X-Files' Interview: David Duchovny Says the World Is 'More Receptive' to Mulder's 'Way of Thinking'

The world has become "more receptive" to Mulder's way of thinking on The X-Files, David Duchovny teased when discussing the show's revival. The series star also discussed how he approaches the character with shorter seasons, Darin Morgan episodes and more.

Watch the video interview with David Duchovny:

Here are a few highlights:

  • "What's interesting to me is to think about how the world has kind of caught up to Mulder's conception of the world. This was a guy who was telling us our government is lying to us ... just a few people believed him. So, it's an interesting proposition to take this guy into a world that is maybe more receptive to his way of thinking."

  • He isn't approaching his character differently with the shorter seasons except in the sense of "let's do it" when there's a possible risk of hurting himself.

  • "He is who he is. The show is what it is. And my job as the guy who plays this guy is to just kind of make sure it's as believable, as sometimes funny, as sometimes scary, and as real as it can be and not kind of cater to my own whims as an actor who wants to be seen one way or another."

  • He never thought he'd be playing Mulder now almost 25 years after the pilot. Working on the show is gratifying and he doesn't know what kind of career he would have had without it. He remembers thinking no one would want to watch The X-Files and didn't think it would catch on.

  • Duchovny always gets a kick out of Darin Morgan episodes and says Mulder is often foolish in them. "His episodes exist in another universe."

  • What makes any show enduring is something that never changes: our humanity, our capacity to wonder or our capacity to imagine. That's what the show is always about.
