April 28th 2010 - Buxton, Derbyshire, UK

Post by Songbird on Wed 28 Apr - 12:36

After an extremely long journey over from Canada, I'm very happy to report that Hoddie made it safe and sound to my abode yesterday. But he was so jet lagged he needed plenty of rest! The reason for this huge delay was because of a volcano errupting in Iceland which caused volcanic ash to cover the UK! Planes were halted in and out of the country, holiday makers were stranded...and so was poor Hoddie! But, once he'd arrived he quickly settled in and made some new friends.

Here he is chilling out on our bed with all my fluffy toys. And yes the tabby cat isn't real.

Caspurr however is, and here's Hoddie sunning himself in the garden with our little

The sun went behind some clouds so I brought him into the living room, where we discovered The Joneses trailer on the TV!

Hoddie immediately wished to immitate his alter ego on the screen.

The movie was released in our nearest city of Stockport today! But unfortunately it is only being shown
for a few days So I plan on seeing it tomorrow night.

Later - Hoddie had a listen to my CD demo, only as you can see my headphones were a bit big for him. (By the way, I managed to sell 8 copies for £2.50 each for UNICEF.)

Sadly he'd missed the gig and karaoke on Friday 16th, and wanted to have a go at performing. So he borrowed my microphone and pretended he was on American Idol!

And even wrote a little song...

I travel to so many places

To bring a smile to childrenís faces

And journey over land and sea

To raise money for this charity

My name is Hoddie - Iím very rare

ĎCos Iím the The House of David Duchovny bear!

Yeah, yeah yeah!

Photos of sightseeing around Buxton will be up shortly. Then he's off to Disley tomorrow where I held the event and on Friday he's going to karaoke night at The Plough Boy pub to meet the folks who helped make the 16th such a success. And when I've got the editing completed, there will also be pics from that evening - also links to video clips of my gig and a medley of karaoke singers (including my husband Pete.) Next week he's taking Hoddie to work with him, and is going to teach him to drive a Trent bus!

Later,

Penny xx

Re: 2010/04/28 - Buxton, Derbyshire, UK

Post by Songbird on Thu 29 Apr - 5:23

Yesterday afternoon I took Hoddie round town

This is The Crescent, which used to be a hotel. At the eastern end there used to be thermal baths, where folks would travel from far and wide to bathe in the healing spa waters.

http://www.buxtononline.net/Buxton-Online98/Buxton-Online-Derbyshire-Peak-District-Community98/crescent.htm

Just around the corner is The Old Hall Hotel where Mary Queen of Scotts once stayed. If you look in the window you can see her ghostly reflection! Actually that's Mum, who helped me with Hoddie while I took the photos.

http://www.oldhallhotelbuxton.co.uk/

There is actually a ghost hunt held here for lovers of the supernatural.
http://www.eerie-evenings.com/Old-Hall-Hotel-Buxton-Ghost-Hunt.htm

We then headed towards the Pavillion Gardens

and walked past The Octagon, whilst on the way to the tourist info centre to pick up some leaflets and post cards.

http://www.paviliongardens.co.uk/

Since Hoddie has a keen interest in the arts (like his hero David ), he wanted to visit our Opera House.

http://www.visitbuxton.co.uk/attractions_opera.htm

My Dad (who was also with us) took a pic of me with Hoddie so he could wave to everyone.

You also get a full shot of the beautiful building. We get stars from all over the world visit here. I have also done some performing on the stage for charities over the years.

While out and about I discovered some interesting news about how film makers are using Buxton more and more to make costume dramas. We're turing into Vancouver! So if Gillian Anderson ever comes up here to make a period drama..? Well ya never know?

On the way back to my parents flat Hoddie felt thirsty and spotted a well

So I took him over so he could try our Buxton Spa Water, which is bottled here and sold all over the world. I know I'm heavily biased but it is the BEST! The water comes from a underground spring which runs out of the brass lion's mouth constantly.

http://www.buxtonwater.co.uk/

Now we are off to Disley where I held my event for UNICEF a few weeks ago.

Hoddie in Disley...and then I treated him to The Joneses!

Post by Songbird on Fri 30 Apr - 8:37

Glad you guys are enjoying Hoddie's adventures in the UK.

Yesterday was a day of travelling and I didn't get home till midnight! First I took Hoddie on the bus to meet my friend Lynn in Disley. She drove us to Lyme Park, and after some persuasion, the guy at the entrance let us in for free to get some photos. I explained all about the project and UNICEF, plus I had the banner across the dashboard and letter as proof.

http://www.peakdistrictinformation.com/visits/lymepark.php

Unfortunately it then started to rain! So we got a bit wet but carried on with the photos.

Everyone I've introduced Hoddie to has fallen in love with him, and Lynn was no exception. She even stole a kiss.

We drove back into town and the kept on coming. This is the war memorial with the Rams Head pub behind. After the photoshoot we went in there to dry off and get some coffee.

Our final stop was the Plough Boy, where I held my event a few weeks ago. Met a lovely couple, and asked their son if he'd like to hold Hoddie?

He was such a lovely looking lad (kind of like a young greek god, with those long blonde curls) so I had to get a close up. His mum said she'd definately be checking out this site.

After a short stay at Lynn's, Hoddie had another bus ride. This time it was to the city of Stockport near Manchester to see 'The Joneses' at the UGC cinema complex. My sister was supposed to meet us but didn't show. But I had Hoddie for company, who sat on my knee for most of the movie after drinking his soda.

There we're only several folk in the place, and I did manage to take some pics of Hoddie enjoying the movie. Had to be discreet though and keep the flash off, so quality is not the best.

Here he is enjoying David on the large screen - as was I! And here's a few more I took, with Hoddie on my knee.

I thought I was going to find the film rather superficial? Okay I did in places, but on the whole I enjoyed it far better than I thought I would. I definately want to see it again, as I missed bits whilst trying to take the pics.

Oh and Hoddie's verdict was a definate

We're off to the karaoke night at the Plough Boy this evening to do some

Penny xx

Took Hoddie for his final outing today before he heads out to Germany on Wednesday. I'll miss the little guy. He came along to my choir rehersal and met the ladies, a few of whom posed for a pic.

Lynn with Diane and Josie in front of framed photos of Chapel Ladies Choir over the years.

and last but not least...

me with Diane and Josie.

I'll be putting a separate thread up with all the UNICEF gig event photos and video clips soon. Just haven't had time yet, what with my husband's scare recently, losing his memory (see the rant and raves thread in Community) among other stuff.

This is the event I organised for UNICEF UK on behalf of The Hoddie Project, even though unfortunately Hoddie wasn't able to attend due to being stuck between Canada and the UK because of the ash cloud!(However, I do have pics of the famous bear hanging out with folk at the Plough Boy pub two weeks later, which I'll add at the end. )

More lovely people who gave their support.

Loving the I NY tee shirt!

Hoody Hoddie!

Giddy up!

Yup Hoddie had a great night...and as you can see got rather drunk!

+ =

So much so - he ended up on the ceiling beam!

Safe to say he recovered just fine and is now winging his way to Germany. Should be there soon.

Penny xx

PS: I was required to fill in a form for UNICEF UK and post it with the money I collected. Here's the receipt they sent to me recently.

As you can see the final total (after adding sales of my DVD demos and my Mum also adding a £50.00 cheque ) was £210.50 - which Mary can now add to The Hoddie Project fund.

Re: 2010/04/28 - Buxton, Derbyshire, UK

Post by Songbird on Mon 17 May - 9:23

Thought I'd announce this here as well, seeing as it's to do with my singing...

I sent an application form over the Internet for a new talent show that SKY are doing. Unlike X Factor they are actually looking for talent only (not bad performers as well like the other one does for entertainment.) Anyway I'm pleased to say they phoned me this afternoon to tell me I'm one that's been picked as a guest auditioner! Must've liked my video clips I sent (You Only Live Twice) and (Chiquitita)! All guests are being seen between 9am - 10am on Thurs and Fri. Then they are holding open auditions for anybody at 10am after that through both days. My pal Lynn (who you saw on the video clips) might be having a go (I really think she should!) Guy on the phone said I'll be singing a song acapella style and it'll be an informal meeting with directors and producers of the show. I've chosen 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' from Phantom. Bit flippin' early to be singing though - still I'll give it me best shot. He also said bring any recorded music I may have. Well I've loads of demo songs. He was suggesting any karaoke backing tracks I may have recorded? I told him I have 4 cover songs I completely re-recorded in a studio with musicians, and I'll also put the original songs on as well. Oh yeah, and one of those re-recorded is of course 'Gloria!' The actual auditions in front of TV cameras will be next month.
So here I go again!

WISH ME LUCK!

Great news!

My friend Lynn emailed that talent show. They asked her loads of questions over the phone, then said Friday was full up. But after she explained to them that I was already a guest and would have stayed there all day to make sure she took part in the open auditions, the guy said she could join me! I wonder, was it because I'd mentioned in my application form online that I'm disabled? Speaking of which I've decided I'm singing 'I Wonder', which is an ABBA song, only not very well known - off ABBA -The Album. I think that sounds good without music, where as the Phantom song needs the orchestra sound behind you. So I could do that in the June audition (IF I get through?)

Well the audition was fine, so now I just wait up to 4 weeks to see if they want me for another? The producer did take my CD demo (as I was asked over the phone if I had any material? ) I also had a fairly long interview afterwards about my singing history etc. Unfortunately my friend was not given one, so she feels she's not going any further? It was her very first audition, whereas I have several behind me and I know how frustrating it can be. I just go with the flow these days! Off to The Plough Boy for some serious karaoke - well in the mood!

Penny Evans organised a fundraising gig at her local Cheshire pub in May. Guests were treated to a wonderful supper, tombola and auction. It was a huge success raising just over £200. Great work Penny.
