The street I'm staying on looks very familiar. I'm pretty sure the filming for the scene in House of D where Tom comes back and talks to Pappus (on the same street he grew up on) was done nearby. I've taken HoDDie to The Dish today for breakfast (forgot what real service is like, been in New Mexico too long). It's pouring rain outside

Re: 2010/10/28 - New Mexico with Tessia

Post by spooknic on Sun 7 Nov - 12:42

The tale of HoDDie in NYC. I'm going to put most what we did here, but I'm not going to post the pictures that aren't related to HoDDie's journey in some way. I'll put up the other pictures and courser details elsewhere, and then the pictures related to the play elsewhere as well.

Waiting at the airport in Albuquerque

We got into La Guardia airport about 2 pm NY time and hopped in a cab over to the place we were staying. I tried not be too much in shock, but things are so different from where I've been that I was sort of transfixed or mesmerized and it took me a bit to adapt to the pace. Everything is supersized, and while I was expecting to see twenty or so cabs lined up outside the airport, I was still baffled on some level by that.

HoDDie kicking his shoes off at our room near 8th and 22nd st in Chelsea just after our arrival. We loved the view out of our window.

I did some planning, mental recoup, etc and then walked down 9th avenue and went into a Starbucks (Oh yeah!). Good way to acclimate is to go into some familiar place of business. After that, I found my way over to the Drama Book Shop on 40th st and went to Neil Labute's free reading. The reading was moving, thought-provoking, and hysterical in some places. Neil is quite the character. He signed my copy of The Break of Noon and I told him the reading was incredibly enjoyable. It was dark by the time I got out (or as dark as it gets with all the lights, lol).

By then I was starting to enjoy the pace of things and I felt completely comfortable about walking back, so I did. Strangely, I loved all the sirens and loud noises. I have to admit, that part of the city at night reminded me of a scene out of the movie Blade Runner. It stirred something in my subconscious, and I had started noticing the vibration of the subway underground.

I got back, made some phone calls, and surfed the web on my phone for a bit.
Next morning, HoDDie woke me up because I was trying to sleep in. Razz It was pouring outside, and the rain always makes me sleepy. I got ready, stuffed HoDDie in my bag (poor baby Razz) and took off to do some on-foot touring.

After breakfast at The Dish on 8th ave. HoDDie finished my omelet because I couldn't eat the whole thing. I was starving but could barely stand to eat anything solid pretty much the entire time I was there. Orange juice was my friend. :D The service there was great and it had a pleasant ambiance.

We walked around for an hour or so. The avenues are chalk full of cafes and specialty shops, the kind of stuff we only see in tiny little downtown Albuquerque. I remember there was a tea leaf reading psychic shop on 22nd I think? I wanted to go in for giggles (have her read HoDDie's tea leaves, lol) but thought I'd do it later, and I never got around to it. Imagining that as a photo for HoDDie was good enough for me.

I wanted to see the Chelsea Hotel, which was close by.

Outside the Chelsea Hotel. Love those placards. Oddly, HoDDie's right shoe and mine both came untied around the same time - cute.

Taking a break from the rain in the lobby of the Chelsea Hotel. We got some tourist literature in the lobby and they were kind enough to allow me to take a couple photographs toward the front of the building even though they had some construction going on near the desk behind me.

We went back to the room and dried off and I tried to put together a plan of some of the things I wanted to do/see while I was there. We then made our way down to Jefferson Market Garden, where the Women's House of Detention used to be. It was closed, but we took some pictures. It is a very charming garden in the middle of all this development and cit (I walked right by it the first time). It's sort of like finding a rose inside of car tire lying on the street, and it's a manifestation in reality of a metaphor for life, which made it a really beautiful idea in the context of David's movie. Makes your heart beat a little bit differently. Heart

(tried to get the whole placard in, close, ey? *wince. I could reach up and screw in a light bulb with these arms, but apparently they still aren't long enough, lol)

Jefferson Market Garden

Jefferson Market Garden

I walked around 11th st and 2nd avenue in the east village for a while (where David says he grew up) and took note that the culture was different. I got the impression there was more of a literary culture in that area. ?? Not sure if there was anything to my impression. I went a thrift store on 12th and 2nd and bought a few books (one a very touching play called The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-on-the-Moon Marigolds that I read on the plane. We stopped at East Village Pizza, for some (you'll never guess)....Pizza.

I walked to the Tribeca neighborhood to meet Pat, her mom, and some friends of theirs. We had some good conversation, drank some wine, and what not. Good times with great company, with a nod to Pat and her mom, some of the coolest ladies ever. Then we took a cab over to Christopher st for the play. I'll tell you about that somewhere else on the forum.

The next morning HoDDie and I met up with Pat, Penny, and Pete. Penny and Pete had me in stitches most of the morning (and much the day) and we chatted with Paula over skype for a while.

The four of us. Pete is such a loyal cameraman.

Then Penny, Pete, and I went off were tourists for most of the rest of the afternoon. I'll just run through it now and post a few pics of HoDDie. I can add more later if needed. First, we took the sub to Central Park and walked through it. It is really....green. I could spend a lot of time there. Smile I lost my MetroCard and had to walk back and get another one - . I love the subway - it's like instant travel gratification, lol, and I couldn't help thinking of the movement of the train, the way it roars into the station and quickly slows to a stop without missing a beat as analogous to the mentality in that city. I think I fell in love with the sound of it. I rode the subway back to the downtown end of Central Park and met up with them there, because they took the bus on the other side. We had hot dogs - must! Then we went to the Empire State Building observatory and we got some really nice pictures.

We took a trip to Times Square and I think we took these pictures of HoDDie there.

That's the real Statue of Liberty, you know. Razz Next time. :D

After that, I went back and grabbed everything I needed for the play, caught the sub down to Christopher st because I think I blew the tendons on the tops of my feet out (like tires or something, lol), and met Penny and Pete at the restaurant across the street. We went to the play, but I'm going to wait to tell you about that.

I spent most of the next day in airports and on planes flying home....and I was a little disappointed upon arriving in Albuquerque. But we have nice sunsets, so hey...whatever. I want to go back to NYC and hang out at the play every night until it ends, but that just isn't going to happen. Now I'm resting from my vacation. Razz

Favorite things about Manhattan: The sound and vibration of the subway train, that David is there, the character of some of the less commercialized neighborhoods, the pace and the directness of people. Oh, and I'm definitely going back as soon as possible. *G

Love your photos of the Halloween party and your NY ones before you met me. Unfortunately didn't get to see the HOD garden as I was so tired and legs were sore after our trip around Manhattan, so it's really nice to see your photos of the place. Smile Yep, Pete suggested we put Hoddie on top of Statue of Liberty in Times Square. Glad you shared that day with us...we really took Manhattan by storm hon! Remember that gay bar Pete took us to after the play? You could always teach Hoddie that beer pong after a basketball game.
