David Duchovny – Hell or Highwater

When A-list actors embark on recording careers, they’re often on the defensive before the music even comes out. Billy Bob Thornton — who drums and sings in the sorta-okay rockabilly outfit The Boxmasters — has always insisted that his fortune as an actor is “accidental” and that music is his first love, a stance akin to a supermodel saying she was just offered a contract after accompanying a friend to an audition. That kind of success doesn’t happen accidentally; you have to actually want it.

So, it’s refreshing that David Duchovny’s musical debut is such a low-key affair. He makes no false claims of being a musician before he was an actor — in fact, he didn’t even start playing guitar until a few years ago, which coincided with him trying his hand at poetry. His poetry rhymed, songs are supposed to rhyme, bada bing bada boom: He had enough material for an album.

And, to his credit, he knows his way around a meat-and-potatoes chord progression. Opener “Let It Rain” and the more Western Swing-leaning single “Another Year” both have a likable roots rock directness akin to latter-day Wilco and R.E.M., two bands that Duchovny cited as influences while recording. Likewise, closer “Positively Madison Avenue” rolls along with muscle that feels custom-built to soundtrack bar chatter. It thankfully lacks the theatrical pretension found in other actor-fronted bands like, say, 30 Seconds to Mars.

But, as nice as it is to see a 54-year-old celebrity be so humble when picking up an instrument for the first time, Duchovny’s musical greenness shows throughout his debut, especially in the lyrics. The title of the album and its namesake song comes from an overused saying, and the words elsewhere rely on similar cliches as Duchovny makes surface-level observations about war, addiction, social media, and, most of all, crumbling relationships. For his part, he tends to blame himself for his well publicized romantic failings, but that doesn’t make phrases like “You can’t hurt the one you already left behind” and “If it’s multiple choice, I gotta mark ‘none of the above'” any less robotic. And when he tries to venture into more poetic, image-driven territory, it just comes out purple: “Cowgirl gaze and a sailor’s mouth” or “I can’t turn this shit-storm right into some rainbow sun-shower of holy red wine.”

There’s also his voice, which, while serviceable, doesn’t have much of an identity yet — more a smoother Leonard Cohen than any kind of unique personality. It’s no coincidence that he name-checks the singer-songwriter in “Positively Madison Avenue” and, earlier on, The Beatles in “3000”. You have to emulate before you can innovate, and as Duchovny continues to hone his musical chops, perhaps he’ll transform the sounds of his heroes into something that’s distinctly his own.

Essential Tracks: “Let It Rain”, “Positively Madison Avenue”

David Duchovny's 'Hell or Highwater' album review: 'The X-Files' actor makes a credible rock album

Put away your prejudices. Not every actor who yearns to be a rock star sounds like a poseur.

True, albums by Don Johnson, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, and more have reeked, but David Duchovny shows genuine cred, and exudes some real appeal, on his recording debut, “Hell or Highwater," cut at the late age of 54.

Duchovny’s singing isn’t wildly at odds with his acting persona: He’s sullen, inward, and broken, with a character redeemed by a dark charm.

The “X-Files” actor can sound Dylanesque - but in a Jakob, not a Bob, sense. He has the kind of husky tone that would allow him to get away with talking his way through the songs. Yet, he can hold a note long enough to give him some pop chops.

The music, credited entirely to Duchovny, leans towards hearty folk-rock, with ample guitar outbursts. They’re exercised best in the psychedelic “Unsaid Undone.” Most of the melodies may sound familiar, but they’ve got solid hooks, in the mode of the upbeat side of Jackson Browne.

Lately It’s Always December” has some outlaw country to it. You could imagine Waylon Jennings mumbling along. In “The Things,” Duchovny wrote a bridge that has some of the swirl of jangle-pop.

The star penned all the lyrics as well. They can be derivative. He paraphrases Jim Steinman (via Meatloaf) in “The Passenger,” and Leonard Cohen in “Let It Rain.” In “Positively Madison Avenue” - inspired by a TV ad that featured Dylan - he name-drops both Bob and Cohen.

Duchovny knows as well as anyone how crazy it would be to apply those kinds of comparisons to him. But in besting the grand majority of other actor/singers, he has done himself proud.

Music News: David Duchvony to Release Debut Album ‘Hell or High Water’

Post by Pippytu on Sat 16 May - 21:02

Here is a review

Hell or Highwater
David Duchovny
Label:
Release date: 2015-05-16

As an actor David Duchovny needs no introduction; most of us have seen or heard of "X-Files" and various movie roles he's filled. As a budding musician, however, his debut album Hell Or Highwater has the honor of showing us his musical side. What it mainly proves is that he's not afraid to get his feet wet, even if he isn't quite ready to swim with the big sharks.

Having always written poetry and learning how to play guitar within the last few years, Duchovny has proven that even a lightly seasoned musician such as he is can still make a decent go of it in the current landscape of new artists and music. He doesn't seem to care how the album is received either way, according to a recent quote in a Roling Stone interview: "It's just been a real pleasure in my life, regardless of who buys it and what people think of it when it comes out."

Hell Or Highwater is actually not too bad of an album, even if you're a sceptic like I was before I heard it. It's made up of simple arrangements and honest lyrics backed by his folk/americana vocal style. The album can be seen as a drawing board where he attempts to make his mark on the larger rock canvas that stretches across indie America.

Some songs work, and some border on forgettable. 'Let It Rain' is slightly predictable, but decent enough to be counted among any other straightforward folk/rock tune from the past or present. '3000' is a tad bit annoying/repetitive as he belts out the chorus "3000 steps in the dark / 3000 steps across the park / 3000 steps might take some more / 3000 steps to your door." You can sense his passion, but it kind of falls flat after the first refrain.

'The Things' has a Tom Petty vibe to it with its pacing and Duchovny's vocal delivery. His tone isn't completely flat, but it almost feels like he's talking to you rather than singing. It works here, though, as he's talking to a former lover about past wounds and the healing of time (or scarring, as in this case). His message is conflicted, but still worth voicing: "The things you said were not untrue / The things you wore were okay too / The things you kept the things you threw away / The things you thought I never knew..."

'The Rain Song' shows Duchovny at his most poetic. He employs a Leonard Cohen-type angle to his analogies as he sings about how he's not a meterologist or astrologist and doesn't need a weatherman concerning his love life: "Baby baby as the heavens descend / You and I will say amen / This old cold front will move along / Meet me back here where you belong / It's always raining in this song." He doesn't reach the level of the dirge master himself - as no one could - but he gets just close enough to warrant a mention.

David Duchovny is no virtuoso. Who would expect him to be? But for a guy who recently learned to play guitar and decided to take a stab at singing and song writing, Hell Or Highwater is an effort that's at the very least still worthy of some kind of applause; maybe not rapturous, but surely welcoming.

Music review: David Duchovny - ‘Hell or Highwater’

Posted 5 hours ago

As one of the main characters of “The X-Files,” David Duchovny played FBI agent Fox Mulder and captured the hearts of every viewer interested in cases involving the paranormal, conspiracy theories and proving the existence of extraterrestrial life.

I was one of the faithful viewers planted in front of the television each week for nine seasons as Mulder and Scully investigated cases of the truly bizarre. With the recent announcement that the popular show will be returning to television after signing off in 2002, Duchovny entertains fans with his first venture into music.

No need to roll your eyes or shake your head in disbelief with yet another actor trying to make a memorable mark in music.

“Hell or Highwater” is a credible effort by the 54-year-old actor. After learning how to play the guitar a few years ago, the New York City native eases into his debut release with the charm and spirit of a seasoned professional. The 12 new tracks penned by Duchovny in his apartment possess traces of Jakob Dylan, Pete Yorn and Jackson Browne.

The title track is a soulful, passionate, gritty and honest love song that highlights Duchovny’s folksy voice. Soul-stirring lyrics covered with melodic folk and rock textures showcase Duchovny’s writing abilities on songs like “Let It Rain,” “Unsaid Undone” and “Another Year.” Duchovny’s debut album follows his first novel released in February.

Duchovny has stated that the making of the album has been a dream come true. With “Hell or Highwater,” the actor, director and writer turned musician can confidently continue to pursue his musical aspirations without hesitation.

Clint Rhodes is the Herald-Standard music reviewer. He can be reached at crhodes@heraldstandard.com.

David Duchovny
Hell or Highwater

I want to believe. But the truth is, the musical debut of X-Files star Duchovny is about what you’d expect from an actor who just started picked up guitar a few years ago. His husky baritone is amateurish and average, his lyrics substitute wordplay for thought, and his country-rock tunes clearly emulate heroes like Dylan and Cohen and Wilco. Trust no one who recommends this.

RATING: 2 (out of 5)
