Game of Throne's' Gethin Anthony tackles Charles Manson for 'Aquarius'

Post by sir on Tue 26 May - 9:50

The actor playing Charles Manson in Aquarius got a laugh out of what I was implying for comedic purposes.

I just was wondering if Gethin Anthony had pondered the notion that the job of all actors is to entice others to immerse themselves in the story and the characters. Charles Manson had a similar ability to influence people and convince them to come along for a different kind of ride – a murderous one.

So does Anthony think there was a consummate actor buried somewhere in Charles Manson? And while I didn't want to say that all actors are one step away from being Charles Manson, I joked with Anthony that if he wanted to suggest it, I certainly would be glad to listen.

“No, no, no, yeah, no,” a laughing Anthony stammered. “I'm not going to say that – that's brilliant.

“But it has occurred to me to what extent people manipulate their performances in life, and to what ends.”

Manipulation is lurking in the weeds in the new series Aquarius, which debuts Thursday, May 28 on NBC. Aquarius stars David Duchovny as a homicide detective named Sam Hodiak, a Second World War veteran who barely recognizes the hippie-filled and drug-fuelled city – Los Angeles, 1967 – that he's trying to police.

Almost a half-century later, I don't think you can count it as a “spoiler” if I remind you that the infamous “Manson Family” murders took place in 1969. So Aquarius peeks at an earlier version of Charles Manson, when he was an odd and intense ex-convict trying to break into the music business.

But his “Family” of followers is forming, including impressionable 16-year-old Emma Karn (played by Emma Dumont). It's through the Emma character that Duchovny's Sam gets involved.

So Aquarius is not about the murders – at least not yet. That maybe helps to answer the questions I've received from TV lovers already, wondering how a series that features Charles Manson possibly could be on network television, rather than cable.

“It should be clear that Aquarius is really about a policeman in the late '60s, not (only) about Charles Manson,” said Anthony, a 31-year-old English actor best known to TV audiences for his role as Renly Baratheon in Game of Thrones.

“(Aquarius) is about David's character and everything else that was going on in Los Angeles and the United States in the late '60s. There are huge story lines about civil rights, the feminism that was coming at that time, the young people's curfew in L.A., so there's a lot going on.”

Still, the inclusion of Charles Manson obviously is a big hook.

“One of the useful things about playing such a notorious man is that there's a wealth of information out there,” Anthony said. “I almost could have been snowed under with reading and watching.

“But it really became about listening to his voice. There's an interview that he did with a studio engineer in 1967, before he was part of the (murders). I found that very useful, to take me back to the point where our stories take place.”

Manson remains alive today, 80 years old, still controversial, and still in prison. After Anthony got the role, did he consider trying to contact Manson?

“I very seriously thought through the implications,” Anthony said. “I got some sage advice and came to the conclusion that I don't think trying to contact him would serve either party.

“Now, if I could I meet him in 1966 or '67, that would be useful. But meeting him at the end of his life, after he has been incarcerated for most of it, that’s not something I pursued.”

Contact or no contact, Gethin Anthony is Charles Manson is Aquarius. There are many types of actors in life. Gethin Anthony is the good kind. Charles Manson is not.
