TV Ratings Saturday: NFL Preseason Preemptions Inflate 'Hannibal', 'Aquarius' & 'Boston EMS'

Adults 18-49: Rating/Share x x x x
Total Viewers (million) x x x x

Note: Do to local preemptions for NFL preseason football, all ratings are likely to be inflated and will be adjusted in the final ratings.

ABC, CBS and NBC tied for number one with adults 18-49 while CBS led with total viewers.

Due to the obvious inaccuracy of the ratings, comparisons to last week's numbers are pointless. Feel free to speculate about how inflated they are in the finals. Last week, in the finals Boston EMS earned a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating while Aquarius and Hannibal each scored  a 0.3 adults 18-49 rating.

Broadcast primetime ratings for August 23, 2015 (All Live + Same Day Ratings):

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)-
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.-

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for  live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.- - Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2015 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.--

Ratings: ‘Aquarius,’ ‘Home Free’ Have Highly Forgettable Premieres vs NBA Finals

TV | By Tony Maglio on June 17, 2016 @ 8:41 am Follow @tonymaglio

CBS’ all-rerun lineup finishes second to ABC’s Game 6 Cleveland Cavaliers win

Thursday was a forgettable night for NBC’s “Aquarius,” Fox’s “Home Free” and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

Thanks to Game 6 of the NBA Finals — won by the Cleveland Cavaliers after the controversial ejection of the aforementioned reigning MVP — ABC easily dominated primetime.

CBS finished a very distant runner-up in both the key 18-49 demographic and among total viewers, beating everyone not owned by Disney despite airing just reruns.

ABC was first in ratings with a 5.2 rating/19 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 14.4 million, according to preliminary numbers.

CBS was second in ratings with a 1.0/3 and in viewers with 4.9 million.

NBC and Fox tied for third in ratings, both with a 0.6/2. NBC was third in total viewers with 3.5 million; Fox was fourth with 3.1 million.

Ratings: Aquarius Returns 'Up,' But Low

By Matt Webb Mitovich / June 17 2016, 8:36 AM PDT

NBC’s ad-free Aquarius Season 2 premiere triple-play averaged 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating on Thursday night, which is technically “up” from its Season 1 finale (which did 1.1 mil/0.2, banished to a Saturday) but down a tick from its freshman run average (2.8 mil/0.5). But hey, no commercials/advertisers to carp, so….

For those who want/need to see Aquarius‘ episode-by-episode breakdown, it went: 3 mil/0.5 > 2.7 mil/0.4 > 2.4 mil/0.4.

Slam-dunking Thursday of course was ABC’s NBA Finals coverage, with 16.8 million total viewers and a 6.3 demo rating — up from Game 5’s fast nationals (16.2 mil/6.0) but down from the prelim numbers for last year’s deciding Game 6 (19 mil/7.2). Regardless, monster numbers coming on Sunday.

Elsewhere: Fox’s Bones (3.9 mil/0.7) slipped 15 percent and two tenths to new series lows, while Home Free (2.4 mil/0.6) was down from all its Season 1 numbers…. The CW’s Beauty and the Beast (810K/0.2) was steady.

TV Ratings: NBA Finals Hold With Tied Series, 'Aquarius' Sinks

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

The mysteriously renewed NBC drama pulls dismal numbers in its sophomore premiere.

Basketball narrowly built on its ratings crescendo on Thursday night, with the series-tying Cavaliers victory in Game 6 bringing an overnight high for the 2016 NBA Finals.

Per Nielsen's metered markets, the ABC telecast averaged a 14.3 rating among households. That follows the previous high set on Monday, which saw a 14.2 overnight rating ultimately translate to 20.5 million viewers. Thursday's game peaked well outside of primetime, with an average 16.7 rating between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m..

The Cleveland win forces a Game 7 with the Golden State Warriors, set for Sunday night.

The 2015 NBA Finals, which this series has been tying or besting at every turn, wrapped with Game 6. Naturally, that proved to be a slightly stronger showing — up roughly 10 percent.

It was not a pretty night to premiere anything else, though both NBC and Fox tried. NBC offered up a two-part return of Aquarius. The period detective drama, which earned a sophomore renewal despite exceptionally week linear ratings, only managed 0.5 and 0.4 ratings among adults 18-49 in the face of basketball.

Home Free, down in its own return, at least bested Aquarius. The Fox reality show averaged a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49 after a new Bones (0.7 adults).

NBC's DATELINE Hits 6-Month Time-Period High in Total Viewers

June 17
11:33
2016

NBC's DATELINE Hits 6-Month Time-Period High in Total Viewers

"Dateline NBC" (1.0/4 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET): Reported NBC's highest 18-49 rating in the time period, excluding sports, since Jan. 28 (1.2), despite NBA programming on ABC in the time period last night.

Hits a six-month high for NBC in the slot in total viewers (best since Dec. 10, 2015, 7.3 million for "Michael Bublé's Christmas in Hollywood").

Maintained or increased its rating from half-hour to half-hour in every key measure, including gains of +11% in adults 18-49 (0.9 to 1.0), +7% in adults 25-54 (1.4 to 1.5) and +13% in women 25-54 (1.6 to 1.8 ).

The second season debut of "Aquarius" aired as sustaining programming without commercials and its ratings will not be included in NBC nightly or weekly averages.

Note that "Aquarius" will increase substantially via time-shifting and VOD - last summer, "Aquarius" grew by +48% going from "live plus same day" to "live plus seven day" Nielsens (0.54 to 0.80) and by 1.1 million viewers overall (2.8 million to 3.9 million).

In these fast-affiliate ratings, "Aquarius" (0.4/2 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET):
In total viewers, is up versus where it left off last summer with its final three Thursday telecasts (2.701 million vs. 2.687 million from June 25 through July 9, 2015), despite last night's competition from high-rated NBA FINALS coverage on ABC, and is running within 0.1 in 18-49 (0.4 vs. 0.5).

Is close to rounding up to a 0.5 (currently reporting a 0.44 in these prelim fast-affiliate ratings).

In Late-Night Metered Markets Thursday Night: In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 2.4/6; "Late Show with Stephen Colbert," 1.8/4; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 2.6/8, delayed by an NBA FINALS overrun.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 0.7/3; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.3/8, delayed by an NBA FINALS overrun.

From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline," delayed by an NBA FINALS overrun, averaged a 1.7/7 in metered-market households and a 0.7/6 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.1/4 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show" (0.9/3). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.3/2 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.2/2 with an encore).

At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.7/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

NOTE: Primetime results are based on "fast affiliate time period" data from Nielsen Media Research. All ratings are "live plus same day" unless otherwise indicated.

During the summer, with so few new scripted shows, we've decided that we'll maintain a single thread for the whole summer with a single spreadsheet covering all the shows that we cover. ie Scripted Drama and Comedy.

We will still be posting the full Final Adjusted Broadcast and Cable Ratings as usual each day.
