The X-Files - Fox Confirms 'Complete' Blu-ray Release; Provides Package Art
Fox's 'Connect' program for consumers verifies date, gives description and pricing
Posted by David Lambert

We passed along word a week ago that the Canadian branch of Amazon was showing pre-order listings for high-def Blu-ray Disc versions of a Complete Series set of The X-Files, along with individual season sets in BD format as well. Fox hadn't formally announced these items to the press/media at the time...and as of this writing, they still haven't done so.

But the studio has now publicly shared information with consumers about "The X-Files - Collector's Box Set: The Original Seasons 1-9" on Blu-ray, confirming that it's coming on December 8th. The price for this item is $299.00 SRP, and below is the studio description and package art. Our thanks to longtime reader (and good friend!) Wesley Mead for the heads-up about those. Between the on-box title saying "The Original Seasons 1-9" and the studio description, it seems plain now that this set probably does NOT contain the two theatrical films. We're still waiting on an official press release from Fox Home Entertainment with all the details!

Now for the first time, all nine exhilarating, groundbreaking seasons of The X-Files, along with special features, can be yours to own on Blu-ray! Although they began as reluctant partners, FBI special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (Golden Globe winners David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) ultimately form a powerful bond as they struggle to unravel deadly conspiracies and solve paranormal mysteries.

Blu-ray Collector's Boxset contains full seasons 1 - 9.

Preorder THE X-FILES in High Definition, Complete Series Coming to Blu-ray on December 8!

Sure, we're all big Trek geeks, but the other big touchstone of the 1990's science fiction experience has to be The X-Files, which is finally making its way to high-defintion Blu-ray on December 8 in the United States and around the world!

Here are a few sample screencaps from high-def German television broadcasts posted at the Blu-ray forums over the last year:

Restored using the original camera negatives, in a process similar to Star Trek: The Next Generation, the team who rebuilt The X-Files brought the series new life ahead of the 2016 continuation.

While the series first began airing in HD on German television in 2013, remastered episodes also hit Netflix and other streaming services earlier this year - but as always, the picture quality available on Blu-ray media far outclasses those online sources!

The whopping 55-disc full-series Blu-ray set contains all of the bonus material from the different releases of The X-Files on DVD, including several dozen hours of interviews, deleted scenes, and audio commentary tracks. If you prefer, each season can also be ordered separately.

In most regions, however, the box set does not contain the two X-Files feature films, but it does include space for the Season 10 Blu-ray release coming sometime in 2016.

Binge Watch: Blu-ray stokes 'X-Files' fire

Dec. 4, 2015
Updated 4:11 p.m.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in the upcoming miniseries revival of “The X-Files” debuting Jan. 24. The pair also starred in the original series.
COURTESY OF ED ARAQUEL, FOX

By MICHAEL HEWITT / TELEVISION CRITIC

If you have a fan of “The X-Files” on your holiday shopping list, that task will soon get a little easier. On Tuesday, 20th Century Fox issues the entire series on Blu-ray, in a collector’s set (list price: $299.99) or individual seasons ($29.99 each).

On the other hand, I’d think twice before dropping $300 – or even $30 – for the uninitiated eager to try out the series based on its reputation.

“The X-Files” unfortunately doesn’t hold up that well today, a victim of the limitations of television of its time. One of the last of the pre-“Golden Age” series to survive, “The X-Files” loses out in comparison to the dramas we’ve seen since it departed in 2003.

Even series that claimed “The X-Files” as a predecessor, notably “Lost” and “Fringe,” were much better.

Created by Chris Carter, “The X-Files” starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, two FBI agents assigned to solve paranormal cases. The pair soon found themselves on the trail of a deep conspiracy that reached into the highest levels of the government – and beyond.

The core problem with “The X-Files” was the scheduling demands of network TV at the time. The series averaged 22 episodes a season, and only about a third of them concerned the serial story. The rest were what fans dubbed “Monster of the Week” episodes, where Mulder and Scully would chase down and defeat some paranormal villain.

The serial story, too, had to last more or less forever. No one knew when the series would end, and by Season 7 the once-interesting tale had stretched itself to ridiculousness.

The upcoming revival will be a six-episode miniseries, which may at last fulfill the show’s long-delayed promise.

‘THE X FILES’

Ran: 1994-2003 on Fox; returning Jan. 24

Starred: Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny

Binge commitment: 202 one-hour episodes

Rated: TV-14

Watch it: New Blu-ray release; DVD; streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Vudu and others; airs on Chiller channel at varying times.
