While a solid effort, Duchovny’s debut album hamstrung by his unrefined vocals

ANALYSIS/OPINION

David Duchovny

“Hell or Highwater”

ThinkSay Music

The man who portrayed Agent Mulder and Hank Moody tries out his musical chops on this, his debut album. David Duchovny, whose vocals are spotty on the effort, gives it the old college try best with the perfectly titled “Hell or Highwater.” The dirge “Let It Rain,” while deep in subject, is a bit hamstrung by its own repetition. The titular cut is definitely a highlight, with interesting chord progressions and some grave introspection on love from the singer that has a defiant urgency about it. It is followed immediately by the pleading “The Things,” in which the narrator enumerates both his transgressions and his desires. “The Rain Song” is a melodious reflection, with the great line “Love is all you need, that’s what the book of John [Lennon] taught you.” Also of note is the dreamy “Lately It’s Always December” and “When the Time Comes.”

Overall, the disc is uneven; when it’s good, it achieves well, but Mr. Duchovny’s vocals prove to be his own worst liability, and thankfully he has acting to fall back on — what with the recently wrapped “Californication” and the upcoming “The X-Files” resurgence expected in the spring. It’s always admirable when an artist tries another methodology, but frankly, here’s hoping Mr. Duchovny sticks with his thespian training moving forward or perhaps gets some vocal lessons.
