Fletch star Richard Libertini dies at the age of 82 after two year battle with cancer

Fletch star Richard Libertini has died at the age of 82 after a two year long battle with cancer.

The comedy character actor passed away last Thursday, his ex-wife Melinda Dillon said.

He had a major role in the 1985 smash hit Fletch, in which he played the stern editor of  Chevy Chase's eccentric but resourceful LA Times reporter Irwin Fletcher.

He also reprised his role in the sequel 1989 Fletch Lives, which was again a massive worldwide box office success despite not scoring as highly with critics.

Known for his distinctive look of bald head and beard, he also appeared as the wacky Latin American General Garcia, who planned cause a global meltdown via a hyperinflation scheme, in 1979 comedy classic The In-Laws, which starred Alan Arkin and Columbo favourite Peter Falk.

He also played  as an eccentric Tibetan mysticwho believed he had mastered the secret of transferring human souls in Steve Martin's 1984 starring vehicle All of Me.

One more thing: He appeared alongside Columbo star Peter Falk and Alan Arkin in 1979's The In-Laws

The actor is survived by his son, also called Richard, his sister Alice and his brother Albert.

Acting veteran Richard was a master of stage and screen, and has a lengthy list of acting credits to his name.

He also appeared in the films such as Big Trouble, Days of Heaven, Popeye and Awakenings.

On the small screen has credits for roles in Baretta, The Bob Newhart Show, Moonlighting and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.


Final role: Last year he appeared as Saul Hodiak in David Duchovny's cop show Aquarius.

He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1933 and started his career with the Second City improvisational group in Chicago.

He moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career during the 1960s, and was an original cast member of the 1966 Off-Broadway musical-comedy The Mad Show, which was produced by iconic satircal publication MAD Magazine.

He continued to appear on television until last year, with his last credited role being Saul Hodiak in David Duchovny's cop show Aquarius.
