Short but cute little video. Someone threw a winking heart toy on stage so David copied it!

Getting Groovy with David Duchovny

If you're following my +The X-Files collection you'll have noticed I went to Glasgow last Thursday with +Stephanie Rebours-Smith to see David Duchovny play. It was our 10th second anniversary last March and I figured we could treat ourselves to some VIP tickets and get the opportunity to finally meet him.

Originally the venue was going to be at St Luke's, a venue in the east of Glasgow I'd never been to but there must have been more demand than expected because it then moved to the O2 ABC on Sauchiehall St. A week in advance they told us that the meet and greet would happen from 5:30 and recommended to arrive by 5pm. We got there around 5.20 and there was a huge queue outside the venue already. We asked random folks in the queue and it seemed most of them were VIP ticket holders, which seemed quite a lot. At the back of the queue we found ourselves behind a couple with VIP tickets and another guy came behind us also with a VIP ticket. After queuing for about 15 minutes it became clear that not everyone was in fact here on a VIP ticket. Luckily we managed to spot that and get in to continue waiting inside.

We didn't get to meet him until about 6:10pm and given that there was a significant, albeit smaller than the queue outside suggested, number of VIPs, I wasn't expecting to spend much time chatting with him. And indeed, I just went and introduced myself as awkwardly as I do for everyone else, later suggesting to Steph that my name ought to make its mark into popular culture so I don't have to spell it out every time. He signed the photograph, posed for a picture with me and that was it. Steph came after me and I suspect she was more interesting than I was but then that's quite typical for anyone. In a sense you have to feel for him having to do all those repetitive signatures and poses, there were easily 150 people with VIP tickets. I know if it were me I'd be work out just doing that, remind me to never become famous.

We waited in the bar at the back for about an hour and then got in just after 7pm, finding the same spot Steph and I stood when we went to see Mr Big together in 2011.

The show opened from 7:35 with a lonesome girl and her guitar called Anna. I couldn't quite get what she was singing half the time but it was enjoyable enough. She is part of a band but I don't recall what she said the name was. By 7:55 she was done and it wasn't until 8:30 that David and his band came on stage.

I'm not gonna list all the songs because I didn't take a note of them. There were most songs from Hell or Highwater plus a couple of cover songs and a new song, which was excellent.

The performance itself was just fine and we had a really good time but I think it's fair to say he's not en par with the great rock and roll names when it comes to stage presence but that's okay. I heard some comments about how his dancing wasn't the greatest, I wouldn't be one to comment on this as I suck at casual dancing.

I was reminded why his music reminded me of Dire Straits as his lead guitar player had some very Mark Knoplfer-esque sounds on occasion and I don't know if they were an influence or not but there definite moments which had this very classic 80's Dire Straits sound.

He even pulled an acoustic for the encore at the end as a prelude to one of the final songs and stepped off the stage to take a few selfies with the ladies at the front and do a few high-fives with the crowd. I did love how engaging he was with the crowd, he even recorded a personal message for his mum who's originally from outside Aberdeen with the help of the crowd, it was very sweet.

So no, I didn't go meet Fox Mulder, I went to see David Duchovny play music and it was a lovely evening, I'm very glad I got this opportunity. Linked are a few photos from the concert, including getting the Kilt on...

Live Review : David Duchovny, 02 ABC (05/05/2016)

by Siobhanne Beattie / May 9th 2016

The music is out there . . .

Actor-turned-musician, David Duchovny brought mellow rock and a little Dad dancing to Glasgow’s 02 ABC on Thursday night, as part of his European Tour.

The wolf whistles and high-pitched screams that welcomed his entrance onstage confirmed that the 55 year old’s days as a sex symbol are far from over. Looking every inch the part in black skinny jeans and leather jacket, Duchovny kicked things off with a humble, “Hey” and track, “Let It Rain”, which ironically in Glasgow, it wasn’t (for once).

Best known as Special Agent Fox Mulder from hit sci-fi TV series, “The X Files”, Duchovny was out in support of his newest venture; “Hell Or Highwater”, his debut album released last May, which shaped the bulk of the laid-back set, including stand-out moments, “Stars”, “Unsaid And Undone” and title-track, “Hell Or Highwater”Duchovny cut a somewhat different figure from his famous TV roles and looked comfortable in this new rock star role; he pouted, strutted and posed his way through the set, much to the delight of his many female fans. However, his mellow vocals hinted that it’s still early days for him as a singer; his lyrics were not always audible and there were moments when his passion clearly outweighed his vocal talent.

“This would only happen here, Glasgow . . .”

A surprise sprinkling of David Bowie’s “Stay” and The Weekend’s “Can’t Feel My Face” brought a funky spin to the show, and was warmly welcomed by fans who danced and sang along. The half-Scottish Duchovny paid tribute to his roots; he recorded a message for his Aberdeen-born mother, donned a kilt (the screaming was deafening) and enjoyed an impromptu language lesson with a front row fan; he didn’t look entirely convinced that “gallus” was a real word . . .

Duchovny may not be the musician he’d like to be; his vocals were missing the trademark growl that could have made them great, instead of average and he danced like a Dad (albeit a very sexy one), but his passion for being onstage doing something he really wants to is impossible to ignore, and exceedingly difficult to resist.
